If you gain a mature companion--
a fellow traveler, right-living, enlightened--
overcoming all dangers
go with him, gratified,
mindful.

If you don't gain a mature companion--
a fellow traveler, right-living, enlightened--
go alone
like a king renouncing his kingdom,
like the elephant in the Matanga wilds,
his herd.

-Dhammapada, 23, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.

I don't live by these scriptures so I haven't tried to understand them. I am not a Buddhist. I have studied it a little. I learned that Buddha did not ever say he was God. And further he once said that it didn't much matter whether we believe in God or not. That was enough information to tell me I didn't want to be a Buddhist.
I thank you though for encouraging me to look a little further into this ancient religion.

my favorite from that is "they say a man talks to much, or talks too little, but they never say a man talks just the right amount"

i think everyone has a little saying about a road, dont take the high road take the low road,

one could probably interpret that saying you quoted to mean one needs buddha or some equivalent to gain enlightment,

of course christianity claims one can only gain heaven with jesus,

so, essentially, everyone is saying the same things just with different fill in the blanks

in order for you to get to (heaven/enlightment) you need (one of/just this one) (buddha/jesus/other)

Christianity is I think the only one of modern "religion" that claims there savior is the only way to get the afterlife reward.

Cheese for the mouse.
