Because humans are humans and they'll use any excuse if they can to do or get what they want. It doesn't matter what religion or ideology someone professes because, lets face it, it's not only religious human beings that do things of this nature. Although, the aspect of holy wars/crusades/the warpath or other things are connected to religion by name, it's still just wars all the same and still done by humans, all the same.
Besides, you just said it in the question, RADICAL. That gives the clue. People can be radical no matter what ideology or religion they say they belong to.
Radicalism, extremism and terrorism doesn't have any place in ANY religion (at least not the ones that have survived to this day). Look and read about Jesus' and Muhammed's lives, Gandhi and Buddha and other representatives of other religions, none of them advocated wars or killings, in fact, they were very much against it. This is what they shared with each other. Radicals share values with each other, no matter what faith or ideology.

Unfortunately belief and philosophy tend to intertwine, and alot of what is written in any religion is left open to interpretation. Because of this fact, you get the people that will take their beliefs to the extreme and read more into the written word than there actually is. It's really too bad. This kind of ignorance has led to more wars and death than just about anything I can think of. It's nice to see the more peaceful religions like Buddhism still holding their own though. I still hold the hope that one day people will be united under one peaceful belief, but until that happens the only thing we can do is be patient, forgiving, and practice compassion so that we can be a guide to a path that others can follow.

Not every religion is one of peace.
Why do wars happen? We have freedom of choice. People pick and choose what they wish to believe. Unfortunately that many times means people do not undergo a complete conversion. Rather, they take selected parts of their religion and then choose to believe they have the "only way" and those who do not believe should be killed lest they corrupt others.
If Christians fully followed the Bible, we would never go to war any more except in self-defense

It's about right or wrong. Most religious cultures can't accept the existance of another god(s) so they, in an attempt to prove themselves right, try to destroy the other god(s).
Furthermore, not every religion or religious faction calls for peace. Some muslim factions, for example, consider people that aren't muslim not human. Some older buddhist and shinto sects also advocated fighting as a way to get to get closer to divinity. And many satanic cults definately don't advocate peace

As a Christian I see no point in a group of Christians choosing to march into the Middle East and kill Muslims. The Crusades don't make sense to me.
When I read the violence-provoking words of Mohammed, I can see why a group of Muslims would choose to march into another country in the Middle East and kill non-Muslims. These jihad, given Mohammed's incitements, make sense to me.

Because religion doesn't control Human Behavior, people still have to choose between right and wrong. Even the holiest people make the wrong choices sometimes.

religion is never about peace - its about getting completely carried away with a hypocritical story about completely unbelievable things.
religion is the root of all evil. wouldnt the world be a wonderful place if we took away all the hate, torture, death and destruction caused by religion and the nuts that follow it.
