Why in the world didn't you share your duress (as you call it) with someone you were in a relationship with? Your lack of communication was what tore your relationship apart. The blame for all of this lies squarely on you.

You should always tell him what is going on in your life. A relationship needs mutual trust and confidence. If there was any reason that you couldn't tell him about what was happening with you and about your number change, then maybe you shouldn't have been going out. If you can't trust to tell your significant other something so important, then you can't really trust them with anything, I would think.
