Wait for it to boot up again after the install process, when it gets to what looks like a nomal screen, wait for it to ask for it. You'll definately see it when it appears.
Trust me, I've done this quite a few times. More than I care to remember!!!

Computers that come preinstalled with an OS, already have the product key entered. An OS can't be installed without the product key. That will be for future reference. Say your computer crashes and you need to install Windows XP. So you pick up your Windows XP cd, insert it and reinstall it. During the installation process it will ask you for your product key.
However, a lot of manufacturers are tying XP to the specific company. So, a Dell XP cd wont' work on any computer other than a Dell PC.

The product key will be entered at the moment of demand by the computer, asking you to enter the 6-12 alphanumeric characters.
