The Jetson's version of a robotic world is not here as of yet. Robot' are only capable of simple programmable tasks. Even the most complex are governed by a strict set of rules, usually programmed in the software controller. These rules are developed by people and reuire no decision making on the part of the machine that is not already programmed by the developer.

Examples:

The Roomba: This device is a simple vacuum cleaner which moves around a room and senses objects, backs off and goes in a new direction. All the rules are pre-determined.

Intelligent missles: A target is predetermined and a computer goes on asearch to look for the target and hits it exactly while flying over a varying terrain moving up and down as necessary using a set of rules. No intelligence here either.

Factory robots: These machines do repetitive tasks without tiring and with perfect precision every time. Like picking up large pieces of sheet metal, moving them and painting them or welding pieces together. No decisions, no intelligence.

TV's: You can pre-program them to turn on a switch stations at a predetermined time. Here you are the programmer. The TV does not make a decision as to what to watch, you do.

There are hundred's of examples to choose from. All have the simple botton line. All are programmed by people, there is no independent thought or decision making.

Perhaps in the future....?
