Hih - two identically worded questions in the past two days - must be a competition question.

Here's what I told the other guy -- he didn't vote my answer the best so I'll let you have it :)



In Gaelic it is Cu Dhub (the u in Cu has an accent)

The black part is because the whisky's color is black, for the story of The Witch of Laggan which inspired the name read this page from the brand's producer http://www.macy.dk/cudhub/UKversion/historien.html


(Winston Churchill called his fits of depression 'the black dog' but that is nothing to do with the name of this whisky)

It's hard to say for sure what the distillers had in mind, but it probably refers to the creature of folklore - a ghostly/demonic black dog that either portends death or even kills the unsuspecting.
