I would like to know how safe it is and how it works. Also, if there were any side effects.

It's pretty safe. No side effects. You just put a line down their back and you're good to go .

If you use the recommended strength of K-9 Advantix it is safe for your dog. However, do not apply it any more than once a month. I like it better than Frontline because in addition to taking care of fleas, K-9 Advantix also kills mosquitoes which are a source of West Nile virus. You do not want your doggie to ever get that. It can be fatal. If I had the choice between Frontline and K-9 Advantix, I would choose Advantix because it kills the West Nile mosquitoes.

Advantix and Advantage are made by the same company, Bayer. The active ingredients in Advantage is imidacloprid. This ingredient kills only fleas and is not active against ticks. Advantix contains imidacloprid and a second ingredient called permethrin. Permethrin is an insecticide that will kill both fleas and ticks. This is why Advantix will take care of both fleas and ticks.
Permethrin is also toxic to cats. This means that cats die when they come in contact with this insecticide. This is why the product is called K9 ADVANTIX. It is not to be used on cats! Permethrin can make some dogs sick as well, especially when used in wrong dosages which is common in toy breeds.
Permithrin is the active ingredient in the over the counter flea control spot on products. These products do not kill fleas or ticks for a full 30 days. These products are also not to be used on cats, but individuals will use them on cats with horrible results. Veterinarians do not recommend these product because of the above reasons.
With this said you have many questions to ask:
1. why does Advantix contain two ingredients that will kill fleas? imidacloprid and permethrin
2. Will the permethrin affect cats coming in contact with a dog using Advantix? Possibly if the product was freshly administered and a cat comes in close contact with the dog. some residual permethrin can come in contact with cat. this is unlikely but possible.
3. why keep small children away from dog after administration? same reason, permethrin.
4. If veterinarians don't like the permethrin over the counter products, why are they selling Advantix, which contains the exact ingredient they warn clients about?

Frontline topspot kills both fleas and ticks using only one ingredient called fipronil. There is no permethrin in this product at all. Frontline can be used safely on cats. The children do not have to be kept away from the pet after application. Frontline is also waterproof and will not wash off while the pet is swimming or being bathed.

Our vet promotes Fontline Plus because there have been some reactions to K9 Advantix; however, I prefer the K9. We live near the woods and our dog encounters a lot of ticks and mosquitos. Advantix is the only one that actually keeps both of these from attaching. The Frontline still allows them to attach, but it kills them within 24 hours. This is not safe because the mosquito can still transmit harmful disease such as west nile or heartworm in this amount of time. If you live in an area where the dog isn't out and about in the woods, like a city or in town, you are probably safe with either.

K-9 Advantix has done wonders for us. I have two dogs, a Golden Retreiver, and a Jack Russell Terrier, and just moved to the Gulf of Mexico. I've never seen so many huge mosquitoes and so many fleas. I tried everything-we got quite an infestation going, until I got the K-9 Advantix. Put it on them and now we are flea free!

It works very well, but I sugest Frontline. I live in the woods in Nj and there are many bugs around my area. When I put K-9 Advantix, it was not water proof, and my dog often swims in a nearby lake. So I suggest Frontline.

I have used it and It seems to work pretty good. I have not seen any side effects, as long as you use the strenght recommeded for your dogs size you should not have any problems.

We have used it for 2 years.....it's great because you get rid of fleas and ticks....but mosquitos too...it's worth the extra money.

You just part the dog's hair and put dots of it down their back....it's kinda thick and oily, so it spreads slowly..

You've gotta keep young kids away for a couple of days.
