When you bought your house was this info disclosed to you? you may have legal rights to help you remove this stuff. If not then you can call an asbestos removal company, and pay them to remove and dispose of said debris properly and safely. I wish you good luck with this, as this could become very spendy.

You're sure it's asbestos? Asbestos was rarely if ever used for ceiling insulation but mostly for heat pipe wrap especially around elbow joints.Raw asbestos is a light gray color. What you might be talking about is wool insulation. Get it tested and have an abatement contractor remove it if it is in fact asbestos. If it's asbestos then you have a real mess on your hands because you have disturbed it and now the dust is all over your house.

You have three main concerns: safety, legality, and responsibility. First, safety is an issue, because asbestos is unhealthy to live around, so it should be removed, or encapsulated. Because it is dangerous stuff, only a trained professional should deal with getting it out. Legally, you can be held responsible for environmental damage, in cases of improper handling and/or disposal. Finally, check with a lawyer, to see if you have recourse against the former owner or the building inspector.

You need to hire professionals to remove the asbestos from your house. I don't know if you can sue for non-disclosure... but that's because I don't know if realtors are obligated to know about something that they can't readily SEE. They can assume that MAYBE there's asbestos in a building from a certain time period but, aside from tearing out the walls themselves, they can't possibly know for sure.

Either way, professionals have special suits and breathing apparatus to make sure their lungs are protected as they remove the stuff from the building. This is NOT SOMETHING YOU SHOULD DO YOURSELF. Small bits of asbestos float through the air and into your lungs and destroy the tissue. It's the equivalent of small shards of glass tearing up your insides.

Get someone out there to take care of it ASAP... and stay out of the house yourself until it's dealt with.

I used to work for an asbestos company and the only way to dispose of it legaly is to get a licensed hazordouse waste disposer to remove it.

Get a licensed asbestos remover to do the job. It will be expensive, but it'll be safer for you and your family.

Good luck!
