Anyone has the authority to detain someone while awaiting the police as long as the police have been summoned. In some jurisdictions firemen have other powers when the crime is related to fire activity (arson, etc.)

As mentioned above, yes, anyone can make a "citizens arrest", which basically entails holding someone whom you observed comitting a crime until police arrive. A fireman wouldn't have any special power above you or I in this situation, but their official status and generally burly physique would make it more likey to be obeyed.
However, some fire officials are licensed police officers as well as firefighters. This is typically the case with fire marshals and arson investigators. Since they would be a police officer, they would have greater power to make an arrest, the same as a regular officer in that jurisdiction.

Some states do NOT allow citizens arrest. Should you happen to live in one of those states, should you detain someone aganst their will you have violated their cival rights. And could be arrested and/or held responsible in cival court. As for firefighters having arrest powers, usually only arson investigator's can arrest.

If they are on duty fighting a fire then yes they have a right to detain you for your own safety read the back of their shirt your not supposed to be within 100 feet of a fireman when on duty.
