Like others have mentioned, people see movies and then have delusions of grandeur, hoping to be the next Jet Li, or Bruce Lee, or any other one of the movie favorites. Some may even be inspired by anime or video games...
People of all walks of life are attracted to martial arts for different reasons, though, whether it be to learn self-defense, help a child learn discipline, or just for fitness or anything in between. To ask a question such as yours might imply that all practicioners of martial arts are idiots, which, as with most gross generalizations, is not the case. Of course, there are idiots involved, but they usually don't go the distance, and have chosen the path of martial arts for the wrong reasons.
I guess the short answer to your question might be that even idiots like to feel empowered.

This is actually a very good question! Partially I think it's because they've watched too many martial arts movies and have fantasies of being some kind of street fighting superhero. A lot of people don't seem to realize that a lot of what they see in movies is special effects and some very clever wire work. A real martial arts practitioner knows it takes years of dedicated hard work and self discipline to become any good. That's why most of the deluded soon disappear off the scene.

People's minds are clouded, they think in order to look strong tehy have to have proof they are. They start out thinking that tehy need to know some cool moves. But some rare idiots find inner peace and discipline and become talented fighters. But who really cares comming from martial artist thats been training for 6 years now that used to be an idiot. The martial arts are designed to remove the week and excel teh strong. some people lose their path but if they are a true Martial artist they will always return to the path of enlightenment.

I know EXACTLY where your coming from, lemme tell you I WAS one of those idiots at one time, i thought that martial arts was about learning how to kick sumones *** with style..... i soon learned how VERY wrong i was, luckily i had a good instructor who actually ended up teaching me very good discipline, im telling u the reason it attracts so many dumbasses is because nowadays everyone is geared on how much *** u can kick and they wanna brag about how they have martial arts belts

It attracts idiots for the simple reason that these knuckleheads want to learn how to fight. They act tough, but deep down know they are not. You can see these guys and girls a mile away. These are usually the ones who come for a few weeks and you never see again training, but they tell everyone they take (insert martial art here). I wouldn't worry about them too much, the true seekers of knowledge will stay and prove themselves and be willing to learn.

Sometimes these people have no direction or discipline in their life and they look to the martial arts for it. We have had some sketchy people walk into our gym, and after a year or two turned out to be great students. Never pre-judge anyone until they prove themselves different.

lol.. my husband deals with this a lot during teaching.. and he thinks it's because so many people come in with a chip on their shoulder, they're too tough and unbeatable.. the other group he gets are people who see a bruce lee, jet li, jackie chan movie and think that it doesn't take much effort to throw rib breaking kicks and punches, climb walls like a monkey or swing a rope chain effortlessly.. the problem with people today is that everything comes so easy, so naturally everything is expected to be so easy. hard work is a thing of the past. most people are tourists, just passing through.. they don't put in the research to say this is a beautiful sacred art that must be honored and respected, they just wanna learn how to kick @$$....

This is a wonderful question. Too many people believe that TV is for real. Many people in Amercia are lazy, they want to pay $$ and get a black belt in one year. There are also way too many "masters" out there. People should save their time and money, just buy a black belt on ebay instead of paying a phoney master thousands of dollars. I also feel idiots are attracted to it becuase deep down they know they are idiots and want to gain self-confidence.
