You can *try* buying a new gas cap, but the best thing to do is take it somewhere to have it diagnosed. You don't have to fix it, but have them check the codes on the computer and see what the car tells them.

The engine light is most likely coming on because the gas tank cap is faulty. The fuel system is pressurized and when the gas cap doesn't do it's job to maintain the correct pressure the engine light will come on. If it is also having difficulty maintaining a steady idle or tries to surge while at a stop light, then I would say that your throttle position sensor is bad. This can also cause a computer code that says there is a problem in the electrical circuit to the torque converter clutch. If you get that code ignore it until after you have replaced the throttle position sensor. This will usually correct that code. While your check engine light is on take it to a place like Autozone and they will do a FREE computer diagnostic check for you. If the gas cap is bad, the computer code will show it also.

Shawn, Tough to say if it's truly serious or not, however based off your description, it is not. Typically, if it is only the gas cap that is defective, they are not usually that expensive, your Chrysler dealer Parts Department should be able to get you a price. Best bet, you take the current gas cap off and check for any debris, clean the seal/gasket around the cap and try it again, if it goes out and doesn't come back on, you're good, if not, like I mentioned, you may need a gas cap, hopefully no more than that. Hope this helps! BrettS Top Care Specialist Chrysler Canada

There is a pressure sensor that you are triggering by not closing your gas cap.

Your fuel system is sealed. If your cap is bad, you're going to be throwing codes all of the time. Get a new cap.

if you take the jeep to an autozone they will hook it up on a diagnostic tester for you. it is free of charge and they can tell you what the problem is, or even just turn the light off for you.
