Try Petfinder.com

They list pets available for adoption or rescue and they don't use breeders. Good for you for trying to give a dog a home the right way.

you could always look up a small dog rescue near you. It may cost a little more than the ASPCA,but typically small dogs get adopted -very- quickly from there (because of people in your situation).

The best thing you can do,honestly,is decide on a type of dog you like. Even a grouping of breeds (sporting, working, hound, etc) will make it easier.

Keep visiting the shelters. They get just as many small dogs as big ones---you just have to be there at the right time. Go to the American Kennel Club's website and see what small breeds appeal to you, and then ask the shelter to let you know if they get dogs of that type or similar (mixed breeds).

Allot of people would rather have small dogs than larger dogs for different reasons, and so when they enter a shelter they go allot faster, just keep checking the local newspaper, bulletin boards, and shelters. The right little guy or Gail is waiting for you somewhere. Don't be rushed, it will be worth the wait for you when you find just the right companion.

If you have a specific breed that you want, contact that breed's parent club website (or call). They can most likely put you in contact with the rescue club for that breed. I'm not sure if AKC has rescue links. Oftentimes, breeders have puppies that they cannot place or have somewhat older dogs that they have 'grown out' in hopes for show/obedience, and when the dogs mature a little bit, they don't reach breeder's expectations and are looking for "regular" homes.

Pick a breed or two that you like and look up shelters in your area for that dog type. We got both our goldens from a golden retriever rescue. These days most breeds have rescues so pick some you like. Go to yahoo search and type in:

"dog type" rescue "home town"

you should find some rescues.

Look in the newspaper ads, as there should be many people selling puppies. Most small dogs you find are going to be purebred, and therefore expensive, but having a pet is worth it!
