i wouldnt put too much money into the cake.
our wedding cake was all white with cream on the edges and surface that looked like lace. and we had real dark red roses.

i really wanted a white cake that was covered completley with white edable roses. that would of been soooooo cool and different. but no one in europe made this kinds of cakes.

we had our wedding there so we planned and bought everything there. but our cake turned out great. it matched my dress and flowers.

If you go to www.weddingcakes.com there is several designs to pick from. There are some very cute ones there to pick from and you can get some ideals from there. Or you can be original at that. You can even go to your local bakery's and see what all they have to offer. I have saw some very cute wedding cakes in the bakeries as well and they can even help you out with ideals. If you have a friend that makes cakes, you might ask them to make one for you and maybe between the two of you--you might come up with a very unique design. Most of the time when an individual does a cake they are a lot cheaper than one that is bought in a store. Also you might even think about having each layer a different flavor, you sure won't know that they are different to look at as they will be covered with the frosting, that is until they are cut but then it becomes a unique cake!!

Look at the cake toppers and pick one out the suits your personality. Our cake topper was a bride dragging the man to altar. It was very funny. You can do a fountain under the cake with differnt levels to it. Go to the bakery you want to use and start choosing from a book they will let you look at that shows what they can do. Also, we had egg free cakes for the wedding cake, due to food allergies. These cakes were delicious and very worth the search. My husband still likes to get egg free cakes from that bakery. Get some flavors that aren't normally found at weddings. Go cake tasting. Very fun activity.

well it all depends on what u want......I recommend looking at web pages and thinking is this me yes or no.....once you find a a cake u like take it to your baker and ask for something like it so it is not too expensive but not so cheapy looking........try these websites or cake designers.....
Margaret braun
silvia weinstock
ron beth israel
just to name a few...........also now you can make mini wedding cakes and put them in a take home chocolate box and at the wedding you can give them something else like chocolate covered strawberries, mini cheesecakes, and small bite size desserts cause sometimes after having an hovders (sp) and the main curse served some people wont even eat the cake!!!!!! or u can do what my friend did she made a large fake cake for the reception and tons of mini cakes exact replica of the big cake but real of course and served that instead.....I actually saved her like 2000 bucks.

There are a billion ways to customize your wedding cake - you can get cakes in any number of shapes, but even if you want a traditional one you can find really cool ideas like having the baker write your vows on it in frosting, or having a cake topper made that really looks like you. I think the best thing to do is search for local bakers (you can find some in the local section of theknot.com) and look through their galleries. Or even any baker's gallery to get ideas. Good luck!

depends on your wedding theme and budget of course. If your wedding is like the traditional wedding try going for the fondant cakes with real flowers on top...if your wedding is the modern type maybe you can get away with a caricature of the couple getting married. or maybe a medium sized cake for the ceremony plus cluster of mini fondant cakes which you can give away right after the ceremony.

We had a 5 tier cupcake cake. They took the base for a 5 tier cake and filled them with cupcakes and different colored icing to match our colors. it was amazing and people loved them! We had 4 different flavors.
