my 4 month old kitten was a stray that was brought in to the SPCA before I adopted him. it doesn't matter where he is or what he's doing in the house, every time he hears a door to outside open up, he comes running. I know that probably him being a stray has a lot to do with it. but he's ran out in the garage twice and I had to catch him. I don't make him wear a collar because the SPCA implanted a microchip inside him. how can I keep him from trying to go outside all the time. he has toys and my older cat to play with. it's just that he's curious of whats out there. I'm NOT going to put him out there either!! I want him to be and indoor kitty like my 2 year old female is. I'm just scared that he's going to slip away and not come back. I live in a huge neighborhood so I don't know what my neighbors would do if they saw a cat without a collar. Please Help. Is there anything I can do? will he grow out of this in a couple of months?

My cats have the same problem. Every time I walk out the door they try and slip out. What I do is get a spray bottle, and fill it with water. When you're getting ready to go outside and they rush to the door. Get your spray bottle ready and when you open the door and you see your cat getting ready, spray him! It works. You have to do this constantly. Also if you have done this enough times, keep the spray bottle next to the door that your cat goes out of most of the time. He will be scared of it and not be interested in it anymore. But don't keep the bottle where the cat becomes friends with it. Maybe keep it on a ledge where the cat can see it but knows that if it goes near the door he is going to get sprayed. Hope that helps!

well, best to have a collar on him because if he gets out not everyone has a microchip scanner he would have to end up at a shelter or something before he could get scanned and someone might asume it's a stray and keep him. as far as leaving the house, the way I do it is get a toy or a laser light and just before you open the door throw the toy and the kitten should go and chase after it and then you are free to go. as far as getting in the house you can try the same thing have a toy or a laser light and throw it in and then you can get in or if there is someone home call when you are almost home and have someone hold or lock them in another room or something. maybe try and see about getting a fence or something outside so if your kitten does get out you have an easier time CATchering him.

Good luck!

Very simple solution, just keep a spray bottle handy, with
water and evey time you head for the door squirt the water
at him or her a couple time and they will run. When i don't
want mine out thats what i do. Believe me they don,t like it
and when they see you with that spray bottle they know what
is going to happen. They turn the other way. Good luck.

He might not ever grow out of it. Just make sure that you're ready for him when he comes running. What I do when I visit my parents (who have three cats that are excellent hunters, so they aren't allowed out) is come up to the door and make that loud "FSSSSHHH!" noise. It usually scares them back enough that I can get in without having to play goalie.

is he neutered? if he is and he still wants to go out you will have a problem...i have a 6 yr old male that crys at the door to go outside but i refuse to let him out because i dont want him hurt so every once in awhile i carry him out to the driveway and let him look around and believe it or not he is satisfied with this...if he isnt neutered then you need to get him neutered and perhaps this will help

Right now, it is a game with him, but soon he will come to the conclusion that being outside isn't as nice as being inside. How close can you get to him? If you can manage to throw a blanket over him, not only will he calm down, but you can safely scoop him up long enough to get him inside.

Spend a few minutes a day training him. When he gets near the door, shake a can of pennies to startle him. Pretty soon he'll avoid the door.

Either that or try the squirt gun method. We used the squirt method on our kitten when he tried to play with the mini blinds. He thought the blinds "did it." and has not touched them since. hehe.

Neverrrrrr smack a cat!!!!

Thanks for adopting :)

I think cats have a tendency to do that. If he's nearby, you can try picking him up before you open the door. If you're leaving, you can pick him up and (gently) toss him in as you close the door.
