i have a lot of experience with the Atkins Diet, because I am a Type I Diabetic, and this is the first diet that my doctor put me on when i was first diagnosed ten years ago. The idea was that, If not eating any carbohydrates or sugar (none, not even fruits and juices), my pancreas would get a rest from producing insulin (which breaks down sugar) and maybe the pancreas would heal and the diabetes would subside. It worked for a lot of people, but not for me, because I was already skinny, and I lost so much weight that I ended up in the hospital, i was 90 pounds, and I am 5'10", so you can imagine. So, the diet really works for losing weight, but you should be careful. I think it's important to keep whole grains in your diet, and not to completely ban every single carb, because some are healthy and good for you. Contact me if you want more info, i'd love to talk.

reshem's description above is quite good.
Atkins is excellent, but you must follow it properly and you must think of it as a lifestyle, not a diet. People who say you only eat meat, or don't eat vegetables are only displaying their ignorance.
Read the book to get a proper description of the plan. Unfortunately, the website is no longer owned by the Atkins family and although it does have a lot of good information, it is primarily interested in selling products. People doing Atkins should be relying mainly on fresh, whole, natural foods rather than artificial low-carb foods.
Here are some resources for further research on the health benefits of a low-carb lifestyle

Edited to add: Hey, Heather, instead of simply regurgitating the same old crap about Atkins, why not do some research, read the book and see how it REALLY works.
>>> This will put your body into a state called ketosis or ketoacidosis<<
Ketosis and ketoacidosis are not the same thing
>>> if you are not getting enough carbohydrates, your body will not be able to function properly<<<
Are you aware that in the absence of dietary carbohydrate the body will manufacture its own?
>>>Most people cannot remain on this diet for long<<<
I’ve been on it for over a year, and I know of people who have been on it for 5 years and more.
>>> and will regain their weight back plus more when they get off it<<<
Please tell me on which miracle diet will you NOT regain weight if you go back to your old eating habits that got you fat in the first place.
>>> If you remain on this type of diet for long it can be deadly. <<<
Please name a disease caused by carbohydrate deficiency…..
>> Dieters who lose weight the Atkins way may really be doing it the old-fashioned way: by simply eating fewer calories<<<
I’ve never understood why this is portrayed as a negative. I’d think that a way of eating where you naturally eat less calories would be a good thing?
>>> the Atkins diet makes carbohydrates taboo -- breads, cereals, rice, pasta, fruits, and vegetables.<<<
Vegetables are encouraged, as are low-glycemic/high nutrition fruits like berries. In a recent survey on the largest low-carber forum, the majority indicated that they had INCREASED their vegetable consumption since starting a low-carb diet
>>> ketosis makes a person lose his or her appetite<<<
Again, what’s the problem with that?
>>>"If there were successful, long-term weight losers on the Atkins diet out there, we would have found them,"<<<
I know plenty; they’re obviously looking in the wrong place.
>>>Millions who are faithful to low-carbohydrate regimens to lose weight are missing out on fiber-rich foods essential to healthy hearts, experts warn.<<<
Spinach, broccoli and other veggies have plenty of fiber.
>>>"By eating a low-carbohydrate diet, you are selecting out those foods that may be rich in healthy carbohydrates,<<<
Like spinach, broccoli, lettuce etc? Do a nutritional comparison between veggies and grains…veggies win hands down
>>>And there's more to fiber-rich foods such as whole grains than just fiber. "The bran and the germ contain fiber, vitamins, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, various minerals, vitamins and antioxidants<<<
Not as much as veggies and berries.
>>> Complex carbohydrates have less than half as many calories as the same amount of fat<<<
However 1) Fat is more satisfying, so you eat less of it and 2) fat uses more calories to digest than carbohydrate
>>>Starchy complex carbohydrate foods such as bread, pasta, rice, and bananas make you feel full after meal<<<
After the meal, perhaps. An hour later, I was starving again.
>>>Diets that require people to go around feeling hungry all the time are certain to fail.<<<
Damn straight. And when I was on a “healthy” low-fat, high-carb diet I was hungry all the time. No wonder I kept gaining weight.

Stay far, far away from it.
A balanced diet consists of bread, meat, milk, and fruits/vegetables. You also need some fats and sugars.
The Atkins diet says no carbs (required fiber and sugars).
You might lose weight right away, but you may also develop life-threatening health issues.
Eat HEALTHY and exercise. You'll be better for it.

Its not really called the 'Atkin's Diet' anymore, its now refered to as just 'low carb' dieting. My wife was on low carb for three years and lost 215 pounds. Basically it means no, or very little, starches and sugars. It is a questionable diet in that your body NEEDS sugars and carbs, so you have to be carefull. She eats lots of flax seed cereals, which are low in carbs, but still have the bennifits of eating grains. She also eats black soybeans, also very low in carbs, but lots of nutrition. As far a sugars are concerned, she eats lots of bell peppers and onions, they contain lots of natural sugars and are not nearly as bad for you as refined sugar.
It can be a healthy diet, if you follow it right. WAY too many people think low carb means eating nothing but meat, bacon. You STILL have to eat lots of veggies, cheeses, grains (flax), beans (black soybeans) and fruits such a blueberries.
I would suggest looking at cookbooks by George Stella, an amazing low carb chef. Check out his books on Amazon or Ebay or something.

Atkins Diet is a system that enables our body to lose weight in a natural way by inducing a change in metabolism. Our body is capable of burning both fat and carbohydrates to provide the energy required to function properly. Carbohydrate, in the form of glucose, is the first fuel used to provide energy to our body. Dr Atkins suggests that when we reduce our intake of carbohydrates significantly, our body convert from burning carbohydrates to burning fat as fuel. This process is known as lipolysis. The secondary result of this process is ketosis. Ketosis is a state in which our body burns fat as fuel. When fat is burned for fuel, ketones are released through the breath and urine, and their quantities can be measured with Ketone Strips. This is how we lose weight through Atkins Diet Plan. Dr Atkins also says that ketosis will affect insulin production which will prevent more fat from being formed. Once we enter ketosis, our body begins efficiently using the fat as fuel and our cravings for carbohydrate will subside.
Atkins Diet plan is based around four important phases. Each individual phase allows you to knowledgeably select which foods to eat based on your need to achieve weight loss, enjoy good health and prevent disease. Food selections will differ to varying degrees depending upon the phase you are in and your individual metabolism. In phase one (Induction Phase), carbohydrate consumption is restricted to 20 grams per day. Most carbohydrate can be obtained from salad and other non-starchy vegetables. In phase two (Ongoing Weight Loss) you add carbohydrate, in the form of nutrient-dense and fibre-rich foods, by increasing to 25 grams daily the first week, 30 grams daily the next week and so on until your weight loss stops. Then subtract 5 grams of carbohydrate from your daily intake so that you continue sustained, moderate weight loss. Phase three's (Pre-Maintenance) objective is to make the transition from weight loss to weight maintenance by increasing the daily carbohydrate intake in 10-gram increments each week so long as very gradual weight loss is maintained. And the final phase (Lifetime Maintenance) is the foundation for a lifetime of better health. In this phase you can select from a wide variety of foods while controlling carbohydrate intake to ensure weight maintenance and a sense of well-being.
