That one is by central park. That is a nice area. The city looks REALLY dirty though in the winter when there's snow because the snow gets all grey and gross.

There are some good and some bad. Seriously though, some streest are just DISGUSTING, but I don't really notice it since I've lived here so long. Some visitors pointed out to me once that it's gross because our trash gets put out on the street. The garbage trucks pick it up, but it's gross to walk by a pile of trash bags all on the street.

Overall, I don't find it smoggy or anything, usually a pretty clear sky.

I've been to other cities around the world and New York is relatively clean. It's dirty in the subway but you won't be walking down on the tracks so who cares (unless the power goes out, that happened to me 3 years ago). Definitely visit Central Park, it's the most beautiful place...sitting in the middle of a wide open field looking around you at skyscrapers...ya can't beat that.

The main reason NYC seems dirty is the fact that we have very few alleys for garbage collection (unlike Chicago for example). Therefore the garbage has to be set out on the streets and you have a problem with homeless people digging through it, etc.
Other than that, you just have more people here and that creates more trash.
However, considering these factors, they really do a pretty good job of keeping it clean.

As a whole, no we are not living in a pig sty. there are areas of the five boroughs that are filled with trash and litter, but if you're in an area that is that filthy, that's not the worst problem that area has.

Maybe you should try and come to New York sometime instead of taking the words of other people.

No, New York gets a bad rap it doesn't deserve just like those that say New Yorkers are rude which in turn they are some of the nicest people.

They have spent a good deal of effort cleaning the place up.

Last time I was there was 2 years ago, and it is a great trip for anyone to make.
