Consumerism can be defined as the effects of equating personal happiness with purchasing material possessions and consumption.

In effect, the getting of things, nicer things, more things becomes more important in someone's life than God.

This is in direct violation of the commandment: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me.
