Santa Monica is a nice town. Lots of great restaurants and shopping. The hotels on Ocean Avenue are very nice - I hope you're staying at one facing the ocean.

Nevermind about the traffic and commuting, you're only visiting and won't really need to be bothered with that - leave that to the natives.

Just enjoy yourself, go see the pier where there's a giant ferris wheel, there is a games arcade there as well - it gets very very crowded on hot days.

Great shopping on the 3rd Street Promenade - all kinds of fantastic shopping with big name designer and branded shops.
If you want to splurge for some expensive shopping go check out Fred Segal - for your $200+ designer denims.

All kinds of great restaurants, if you like sushi only one place to go that's Sushi Roku on Ocean Avenue - make a reservation.
The Ivy at the Shore is fantastic as well - also on Ocean Ave.

And if you want to visit a fantastic Day Spa, that's Burke Williams they're near the promenade. I love the salt glow body scrub! Oh it's just the best!

Yes the homeless are abundant there as well in Santa Monica, but how could you blame them - sunshine and the beach!

That's heavenly. Have fun and ENJOY!

Southern California is so ghetto. I think it's hilarious how so many tourists come here and expect it to be such a great place, yet there's nothing to see here other than dirty streets, and malls, shopping centers, or some sort of shopping complexes, Starbucks's, coffee beans, and junkfood joints like mcdonalds on every other corner.
I would be SO disapointed if I lived in another country or state and came to california. Southern California, and Hollywood are not as great as everyone says.
Also, The beaches here aren't great either. If you want a beach vacation (Santa Monica is near the beach, you're going there), Go to Hawaii, or Bora bora, or the Maldive islands, etc; Southern California is not exactly the best beach spot OR vacation spot.

Santa Monica is a good place to stay. The traffic there is real heavy and its tough getting to or thru downtown LA most of the time. The 405 is a parking lot at rush hour. Its better to be by the beach and close to the best things that are safe.

Santa Monica is great and there are a lot of fun places to go from there. You're really close to Main Str which has a bunch of boutiques, bars, and good restaraunts. Third Str is nice too, although more touristy. I'd recommend checking out Venice, driving up to Malibu on PCH, and the Getty Center museum (if its a clear day--there is awesome view from the garden).

Nice place, interesting people at Venice Beach, a few celebrities there, my grown kids live there and love it, except the rentals are really high. Good restaurants, and of course, there is grand Pacific Ocean. California detractors are just jealous. Bien Viaje

All people are different and like/want different things. Try not to listen to them and dont let their opinion influence your holiday.
I booked a holiday last year to NYC and the hotel I stayed in had really bad ratings on trip adviser etc, but I thought it was great!

They are envious. California is fab, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

LAX is one of the most amazing (in a strange way) places I have ever had the fortune to visit.

Ignore them, they are jealous. Have they actually been and seen it ??? I bet not.
