Yes, and no. This greatly depends on the capacity rating of your come-along. You face the same hazards as you do with a winch, just a greater risk due to the lower capacity ratings. An average winch in use is rated at 8000 lbs, while a come-along average weight rating is 1000/2000 lbs, depending on if it has the pulley reduction or not. Your average equipped/loaded jeep weighs in at @4500 lbs. It has been done before, just accepting a higher level of risks.

sure, make sure it is has enough capacity and DO NOT use it for a tow strap with another vehicle. You should never tow with a chain either. They can all break and a flying piece of metal from one of them can kill. I have a winch on my landcruiser and still carry a come-along for certain situations. It will be slow, but can get the job done, so long as you dont need to pull up a hill that is longer than the capacity of the come-along.

Yes you can but it will be quite a bit more work and a come along wont have the cable reach that a winch does.

Sure and bring plenty of chain with you incase you are way out in the mud where they cannot get close to you or there are no trees to hook up to..

Yes, I keep one under the seat of my Liberty. In close areas they are better. Just check the capacity of the unit.
