when I try to open certain files in a website I get a message( unknown file type)or some files like pdf need certain programs to open, Moreover some videos do not play at all or have an extention not recognized by my windows media player.

Adobe Reader ( http://www.adobe.com ) for PDF files
Adobe Flash (see link above) for videos.

You need to install Acrobat Reader in order to able read pdf file, visit http://www.adobe.com to download it free.
You maybe need to install codec to play the video. Try to search it. There's a lot free codex pack ready to download and install.

to read PDF(portable document format) files you have to download Adobe Acrobat reader. Follow this link-- http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

You'll need Real Player to see most of the videos on the internet.Keep on updating it.

PDF = Acrobat Reader
VLC player = for most video codecs it works
or download k-lite codecs just google it.
