In Windows XP, the registry files are located in your WINDOWS> SYSTEM32> CONFIG> folder (in Windows 2000, it's WINNT> SYSTEM32> CONFIG). The files have no extensions and are named DEFAULT, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, and SYSTEM. If you have other users on your computer, you will also notice other files named NTUSER.DAT and USRCLASS.DAT along with the default files.

The Registry is a VERY sensitive area of your computer. One false step and your computer can turn into an expensive paperweight--I know, the first time I tried to do a regedit, this is what happened (and I was working off a script). Experience is the best teacher.
Learn all you can and what exactly you will be doing beforehand. OR use hijackthis--here you take a picture of the registry and post it. Technicians respond with expert advice.

Click your Start menu and choose 'Run...' then type:
regedit
into the browse box and hit enter. This will open your registry settings, but be very careful what you edit in here, a wrong move can leave you with a broken Operating System.

You can't simply just find the registry folders...
