Best quality is a toyota landcruiser, hands down. Still built in the Araco plant in Japan. Most popular suv around the world especially in places where durability and reliability are essential. For an american daily driver I would still go for a toyota or a honda. your family may poke fun at you, but you will have the last laugh when you realize how much you save in maintenance and frustration. IMO a suv (or any car) from any of the big three is a mistake. They all have such bad financial trouble that they cannot afford to put quality materials or proper R&D into their vehicles. It's not just engines or transmissions either. it's things like A/C compressors and window motors and doorlocks. Just drive any toyota or honda suv and you can feel the difference. They are solid and tight, dont feel bloated and sloppy on the road. ALso look at things like fit and finish, how tight the lines on the hood are to the fenders and how the panels on the dash fit together, door jams ect.
Also look at resale... easy answer.
good luck.
ALso you need to determine if you are looking for a CWBT (car with big tires) or a TWLS (truck with lots of seats). This will help narrow your search. Do you ever leave pavement? do you need a lowrange t/case. Would you use a locking differential? Do you need to tow? And be realistic here, I have a landcruiser on 39" swampers, as a toy. It's cool sure, but it really is not practical so I daily drive a honda. These questions are important in the search for the right vehicle for you.

It depends on how you want to use it. The vast majority of people don't need the off-road, or towing capacity of a real truck, so for most people, a big truck based SUV is a waste of gas. The Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4 both are excellent & get good gas mileage. The Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute is okay too, if you must buy a Ford. If you need a bigger SUV or need offroad capability check out the Nissan Pathfinder, Xterra, or Honda Pilot.
Good Luck.

I once knew a person who purchased a new Hemi Roadrunner, because it was listed as the "Best Car of the Year" by a leading magazine. I liked the car and he didn't. You can guess what I thought of him. My advise - do yourself a big favor. If the family has found a good product in Ford than stick with Ford. Any car can be a lemon including Ford but no one can say they told you so. For me I would stick with a winner and as your life moves on you can always try something else. Good Luck Mark

Well, I have a 2006 Jeep Commander, and they are great SUV's, so I recommend the Jeep Commander. They get better gas millage than some other Jeeps, and they are 7 passenger. I also recommend the Hummer H3, but they cost to much. So I say stick with the Jeep Commander.
