While the events occuring in Lebanon are a tragedy, this is the nature of war. The Israelis have announced that they will investigate the deaths of the UN workers, as I am sure the United Nations will also. While it is possible that it was intentional, I think it is likely a major mistake. The reason I say this is because it would not be in Israel's best interest to engender more condemnation against themselves, and I don't doubt that they are aware of this.
I do not know why so many people cannot understand that this is not just about 2 kidnapped Israeli soldiers. While this event was the flashpoint for the new conflict, it is not the root cause, which dates back many years. If you want to say that the Israelis were looking for an excuse to occupy southern Lebanon again, that I could agree with.
No matter how many innocents die in this conflict the Lebanese government is not entirely innocent, nor is the United Nations. There are numerous UN resolutions in place reagrding the ongoing conflict, and as usual they have been completely uninforced. Most notably UN Resolution 1559 which called for the unilateral disarmament of Lebanese Militias including Hezbollah. The Lebanese government agreed to this resolution in return for Israel withdrawing from southern Lebanon. Israel did indeed withdraw but to date no one has been disarmed in Lebanon.
I think the United Nations could be a great force for good in the world, but instead they are a useless beauracracy interested only in paying lip service to world peace. Conflicts like this will continue in the world until the proclamations of the UN are actually enforced. If you want to argue that Israel's response is harsh you have some ground to stand on. However, you should also realize that by their relative inaction concerning this their own mandates, the UN and Lebanon are definitely co-conspirators to the events that are occuring.
Additional Comment: Ok I have to add this because of so many posters I see doing this. Why is it such a tragedy for so many of you that innocents are being killed in Lebanon, but you show no sympathy for the innocent people in Israel that are dying as a result of Hezbollah's rocket attacks? Does your hypocrisy know no shame?

It's amazing how many of you out there are mental midgets. What would be the purpose of Israel attacking the UN deliberately? To make more people hate the Jews? And when you say that it sounds like they did it on purpose, what is that based on? Because Koffi Annan said so. He wasn't there and he is solely reacting to the news with no evidence. And as far as the Israeli's killing more children than Hezbollah as you claim and talk about proportionality is rediculous. There are many Israelis, including children, that have been killed by the Hezbollah rockets, which by the way were launched before any Israeli action was taken. But like most media you neglect to include any of that, because who cares about the Jews right. Excercise your brain and resist being programmed by the biased media. Not everything you hear first is gospel truth.

Israel targets Hezbollah, however that is easier said then done, because Hezbollah hides and fire upon the Israeli's from densely populated neighborhoods. It is inevitable that it will have collateral damage when that happens. Do you really believe that Israel is responsible for the civilian casualty's when Hezbollah is as callous as it is, in encouraging civilian injury and death?
That silly little twit who is currently the head of the UN, Kofi Annan, has accused Israel of deliberately targeting UN observers. By saying anything as one sided as that, Annan is showing his true colors, he is taking one side over the other and is completely discrediting the UN position. In urban warfare, know one is safe. There is battle all around you, and if you happen to get in the way, you're toast.
As far as Israel's reaction to the kidnapping of two soldiers is concerned, Israel has learned that it must act quickly and decisively when dealing with arabs. Think about it, this is a small country with it's back to the sea, and is surrounded by arab country's who, for the most part, have vowed to destroy it. Under those conditions, only the strong and decisive will survive, and that is Israel.

It is war. It is no child's play. Why are Hezbollah are hiding weapons/rockets in civilian areas? Why did Hezbollah have to kidnap Israeli soldiers? They were not involved in war till then. Hezbollah are declared world wide as a terrorist organization. Israel can not forget past history of escalation and warfare which ended in 2000 and Israel had to withdraw. All these factors have resulted in action by Israel to secure their north so that the menace rockets landing in their backyard is eliminated once for all.

Israel grew to become into created by using taking land back from the Arabs, land that belonged to the Jews over 2000 years in the past. This has heavily disenchanted the Arabs (rather the Palestinians whose land it grew to become into) and ability that Israel is surrounded on all facets by using enemies, enemies that would desire to desire to fullyyt do away with Israel. in spite of the shown fact that, Israel has the limitless help of united states of america of america and Britain (those have been the international locations that created modern-day Israel and so are in some section accountability sure) so the Arabs can not basically invade Israel with usual forces and are compelled to apply revolt/ terrorist communities. a sort of communities, Hizbullah, has been firing some missiles at Israel now and then and then abducted 2 Israeli squaddies. Israel knows that if it does not react then issues might desire to get lots lots worse, any sign of weak point and that they are doomed. in addition to, with the human beings working around the middle-east killing all people they sense like Israel knows that it may circulate greater advantageous than it would routinely and there is not something their bubble gum chewing acquaintances can say approximately it- the human beings desire them now greater advantageous than ever. who's good right here? Turning back the clock and re-growing to be Israel grew to become into in no way stable for many folk, yet now it quite is there there is not any going back. Israel has easily long gone thank you to a techniques and the Lebanese who have been already suffering to advance their usa (please do not say they deserve it you ignorant westerners with soft lives you extremely have not any theory of the international outdoors of your guy or woman front door) are gazing all of it fall apart whilst they and their families are bombed to hell...

War is hell. Not all countrys on this planet have as sophisticated targeting technology as we do. Most are a fire and forget and hope for the best rocket or missle system. As for the non-combatants from the U.N. screw em, they shouldn't be there, this is a war between israel and Hezbollah and anyone who gets in their way becomes part of the war.

Israeli soldiers don't hide in residential blocks shooting RPGs surrounded by innocents trying to stay alive and hunkered down in their homes.
Sorry. Certainally no one wants innocents killed. However Hezbollah has this beautiful knack for setting their own counrtymen up for slaughter due to their savage and unorganized tactics. "Organized tactics" don't usually include strapping up your troops with grenades and mortar shells and send them whistling a happy tune into a market place for the love of Allah. Nor does it mean hopping into your brother's Toyota pickup truck that's rigged with gasoline and C-4 and with the tape deck blasting a tune about sacrificing yourself for the death of the infidels and drive into a checkpoint that has a bunch of women, kids and men who are just trying to carry on with their daily affairs.
Its an exercise in futility for these people who probably with the right education and proper application of their smarts could have contributed to a better form of government for their country. Instead of listening to and being swayed by Hezbollah propagandist swill and sending their body parts 1/2 a mile away in either direction.

Hezbollah tactics are to setup their radio transmitters and firing points close to UN positions and in civilian housing...
To date Hezbollah has fired over 3000 unguided indiscriminate rockets into Israel territory. Israel's response has been to fire precision back at the launching points...
