I've done this. The trick is SLOWLY. Increase the amount of time they're together in increments. Watch the puppy together while you are showering the 7 yr old with affection. I had a 10 yr old introduced to two puppies in this way and though it took about a month before I achieved 24-7 living together, it was worth the effort.

training will alwys be training, it depends on the dog and how much time you have for training, my worry is if the older dog isn't the most well behaved you need to better train the new puppy so you don't have the same problems, and also make sure the older dogs temperment is good enough to have another dog around. when my husband brought home our dobe puppy my older dog went haywire and hasn't been the same since and now has to take puppy prozac ( no kidding) she developed anxiety problems. it is hard sometimes for dogs to share their owners so just make sure you know what you're getting into. and good luck :)

I would first make sure that your older dog gets along with small puppies and he is used to them. Some dogs jsut can't get along with younger puppies because they are too bouncy. Others don't mind.

training a pup is very important...but i don't see why there would be a big problem with training the new pup with the older dog around. In anycase...good luck!

well i raise pitbulls and not too long ago somebody brought an unwanted 4mo. old pitbull puppy. i kept it inside with my 8yr. old pit. you should really try to get them to play together during the day but at night keep the little one in a small area with alot of newspaper on the floor. after you go to bed at night keep the dogs seperated because if they are not used to each other they will fight. at night do not give the little puppy anymore food or water for the rest of the night otherwise it will have an accident. you should teach the puppy to go on the newspaper first and everyday you should move the newspaper closer and closer to the door then finally you move it outside. the puppy should remember where the paper was at last and he will scaratch on the door if he needs to go to the bathroom. when your puppy sees your other dog going to the bathroom in the grass it will no longer need the newspaper.
