can you only get the nationality if you marry an american or live in the US for a long pariod of time? I intend to do both but I think it would be really good if i could get the nationality before that happens!

First of all, you cannot "apply" for American nationality. Your nationality is fixed by where you were born. You mean "apply for American CITIZENSHIP". The first step is to understand the difference between those two things. Then go to this site:

You can go to any US Consulate or Embassy and apply any time that you want to. Keep in mind that the US Government publishes yearly quotas for each country, for immigration in to this country. You probably will have a lot of people from your country in front of you!

If you have a criminal record of any kind, you will get turned down. It is illegal to marry for the express purpose of getting into
America!

Why not write a letter to the US State Department and ask them for their documentation requirements for immigration from your country into the US.
