Dogs urine contains a lot of information including:
age, sex, breed of dog.
Other dogs sniff areas so as to leave their scent so that other dogs know if they've been past or not.

Peeing is a form of communication with other dogs. They sniff to see who was there and then they mark to say"I was here" to the next dog. Marking terretory is another thing they do around the perimiter of their space.

It is left over from the days when dogs were wild animals. They established territories by marking along the boundaries with squirts of urine in selected spots. This marking served warning to other dogs that this one would defend their territory.

Because they're marking their territory by peeing, so they're smelling to check what other dogs have marked that territory.

Dogs are territorial, they recognize others from their 'pack' or find familiar ground. It is just as much of a communication thing as it is urinating. Often a male dog will relieve themselves in several places to stake their turf.

Mostly it's for marking territory. They also sniff around fire hydrants and telephone poles to see if there had been any other male dogs around.

To know where other dogs have peed before yours :) It needs to mark that territory as it's.
