If the story is true, do you think he might have been trying to induce a near-death experience?

Why read the Bible literally? FORTY DAYS in the desert. Forty months preaching. Forty hours before Resurrection. That number, forty, comes back many times in the Bible. It's marks PREPARATION, WAITING, a TEST, maybe PUNISHMENT. So the story can be told like this: Christ = The Savior = THE POWER OF HIS LOVE WILL BE PUT TO TEST.

Why the desert? In India, the Bodhisattva, the future Buddha, goes to the jungle. But hear Abd al-Karim al-Jîlî (1306-1403, born near Baghdad): OUTSIDE OF THE HOUSE OF GOD, the band wanders in the desert. The limits are insurpassable to the caravan hoping to find its way back! (approx. translation).

Remember: The Hebrews crossed the desert in their quest for the Promised Land.

WITHOUT GOD ONE WANDERS IN THE DESERT. So, where else to go but OUTSIDE THE HOUSE OF GOD, thus into the desert, for a confrontation with Satan?

WITHOUT LOVE WE WANDER IN THE DESERT, IN HELL: THE DEVIL IN US. THE LIMITS TO THIS EMPTY LAND ARE INSURPASSABLE UNLESS WE UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS HOPE TO BE FOUND ONLY IN LOVE AND COMPASSION.

The desert is your material body, the visible universe, LITERALISM: where one explores often in vain, blind to the Divine that is hidden beyond mere illusions and appearance.

It says that he went into the desert for the express purpose of "being tempted (or "tested") by the devil (Matthew 4:1-11).

Before beginning his earthly ministry as the Messiah, he had to go face what Adam faced and win where Adam had lost (Genesis 3).

But, you're absolutely right. The inducing of a "near death experience" was there. Only it was Satan's idea (Matthew 4:1-11). And, Jesus didn't fall for it. Check it out.

Best wishes for love, joy and success.

In ancient Bedouin legend, Jesus appeared to their tribe, which were a nomadic people who lived in the eastern Egyptian desert. He said that he had come from Jerusalem and needed a break from all the hype and pressure that was surrounding him there.

Jesus struck up a relationship with one of the young Bedouin virgins and shared a tent with her for two weeks.

After Jesus left, the young Bedouin girl, Safa was found to be pregnant. The male child was born about nine months later to young Safa and named Jesus Jr. The family occassionally talked about the fatherJesus who came and went from their lives and passed the name on through males in the family lineage. Jesus the III, Jesus the IV, and so on.

The Catholic church discovered this a few centuries later and for generations has imposed a huge coverup by paying off the surviving relatives to stay quiet. I have heard that someone is writing a book that will expose the whole thing and it will have earth shattering implications on the whole Jesus/Christian movement.

Meditation, Historically speaking, scientists say he tried to decide how he should build his resistance against the romans and of course the Jewish collaborators. There were many armed groups against the Roman occupiers and many perished. So he decided to start a peaceful resistance. However this is speculation. I think the greatest reason was serenity and meditation to plan out his next steps, with inspiration from god.

No I don't think he was... But someday when you have a near death experience will you cry his name out? Will you ask for forgiveness when you are dying and hope that he forgives you?
He was human too! He sacrificed his life for ungrateful people like you and others on here that think its fun to try to hurt Christians. It may be fun for awhile but someday you will account for every horrible thing you have said about him.

No. He wanted to go to a quiet place (away from people) to prepare for his ministry. He knew what was going to come, and I believe besides fasting, he was in prayer.
Remember the account where the disciples couldn't cast out a demon and Jesus said this kind doesn't come out except with much fasting and praying.
