My dog does not hate the water, and has no problem crossing streams or running through low water.. He does not like baths.. I took my dog to a pond I used to swim in whenI was a kid. Me and my buddie jumped in for a dip as did his dog. My dog wanted to go in deep real bad but I can tell he was nerveous. I know dogs are born swimmers so I coaxed him.. Then I almost craped my pants when he staretd to swim like a person with his paws coming up and out of the water with each stroke.. We have a pool in our yard and he watches us swim from the deck.. Do you think he is imitating people swimming? He is of above inteligence for a dog. Is this possiable? I thought dogs just did the doggie paddle?

Unless he is an English Bull dog, and completely lacks any sort of athletic ability, your dog should be able to dog paddle.
If his body is normal in structure and his legs are not bowed or extremely short and his neck is long enough to keep his head out of the water and no flat face, he should dog paddle in time.

A dog that is new to swimming may appear to flail about in the water at first, but they usually perfect their technique. Why not practice with him in your pool with you close by his side in the water with him until he becomes more adapted to the water and comfortable.

Some dogs are built for swimming while some are more suitable for laying on the couch.

Not all dogs swim. Some dogs have a little webbing between their feet, liek the water breeds. Most dogs i have known can swim. My puppy i just got about a month ago, we put him in a pool and he started swimming right away. Depending on how big your dog is, you might be able to hold him under his belly and place him in the water adn let hi get used to paddling if you want to help him learn.

It's possible he's just a bit uncoordinated as he's just learning. After he's got the hang of being in the water he should develop a proper swimming technique which uses less energy (ie, doggie paddle).
