Get colored frosting on the cake...then you'll get a good messy picture! I did this on accident (blue frosting) not thinking about the mess my color choice would make. It is one of my favorite memories to look back on now. I even have the picture blown up to 8x10 on my wall. People still talk about our "lil smurf" and that was 4 years ago.
That will entertain people.
I also made a questionnaire about my sons first year of life as a game for the adults.
I made his theme little people. 1 because he was really into them and 2 they sent me free invitations and a few decorations in the mail for joining fisherprice.com (but that was 4 years ago)
Have fun and Happy 1st birthday baby!

I would do a small birthday party with the people with whom my child is most comfortable. You don't have to have sugary snacks and cake. Fruit, vegetables, and his favourite foods are a good idea.
You might choose a theme color, theme shapes, his favourite music.
Do you really want to spend a lot of money on pre-made commercial themes like Winnie the Pooh, etc? I've nothing against Pooh, but many of these pre-made things are made by sweat shop workers in third world countries. You could make your own characters with colored construction paper, cardboard sacks and natural materials such as leaves, grass, etc.
Babies love water, so if it's hot you might have a lawn party with a garden hose to spray up and around.
No matter what you choose, whether it be Walt Disney, Barney, or some more original ideas of your own develepment, I'm sure you all will have a wonderful time. Happy Birthday Baby!

I did "Balls and Bubbles" and it was a hit. I know the experts say not to do a big party for 1, but it really is cause for celebration! Just acknowledge up front it is a family celebration that you've all made it through the first year (whew!) and enjoy. We had a bubble machine, gave bottles of bubbles as "party favors". I don't recommend characters/clowns for a 1 year old, many are scared. I let all the kids big enough to understand sit in a circle and "help" open the gifts. (people bring even when I suggested they not!) Other games..balls like in a ball pit to play in, toss balls into a container from different distances, throw balls at items to knock down...the options are endless!

Why have a theme for a first birthday? It will cost extra and add stress by worrying about it not being right. Get some balloons, a fun table cloth and food, cake, and ice cream and enjoy it.
Activity ideas for the other kids? Well, that depends on their ages.

whatever you do- don't do it big. after my son got overwhelmed by all of the people standing there watching him and waiting for him to stick his hands in the cake, he cried himself to sleep and slept until everyone had gone home! the first b-day party is more for the grown-ups. something like a small cook-out with a few friends and family might be ok. if i had it to do again i would save all the money we spent on that 1st party for the years to follow! happy birthday little one!

For my son's first birthday we had a handprint theme. Sounds odd I know but we took peices of colorful material and cut them out in the shape of hands, then all of the guests got to take one and decorate it with fabric paint, ribbons, buttons etc. It was an activity for all that came and made a beautiful patchwork memory quilt for him.

YES! My idea is not to stress and have a really good day totally devoted to him. The park, maybe the zoo something as a family because he's ONE! He won't know it's his birthday, He won't understand what the birthday thing is and he won't remember it. Now His second birthday - we can talk about some things....

You could have his party at Hands on Museum or a Fun Center. Plenty of fun activites there for small children. I had my oldest son's 1st birthday at Mcdonalds; he loved the ball pit.

i am wondering the same thing myself and was talking about with a friend of mine yesterday. she suggested something really simple. a cookout with close family and friends. if a cookout isn't your thing, then order pizza for everyone. buy 2 cakes: one for the guests and a smaller one for your son to "play" in. when it is time to open presents let him help the best he can. have a video camera rolling or a regular camera snapping pictures because this is definitely something you will want to remember forever!! good luck!
