I lived there for 18 years. I moved to Georgia because I did not like the school environment there for my kids.

It is a great city with lots of activities depending on your taste. I used to work in downtown Manhattan (by the Staten Island ferry) and that part of Manhattan always has a lot of tourists. A nice place to hang out is Battery Park city by the water-front where there are restaurants and a nice boardwalk overlooking the Hudson river and on the other side you can see New Jersey. Another fun place is Pier 16 under the FDR Drive overlooking the East river and on the other side is Brooklyn. You can hop on a free ride on the Staten Island ferry and pass by the statue of liberty or you can hop on the Statue of liberty ferry (fare required) and spend a few hours on the island.

Midtown - uptown is a bit more ritzy with Broadway shows and brand-name stores to shop at. I personally prefer downtown. If you are a beer drinker there are lots of cool bars-restaurants to hang out. The Metropolitan Museum in uptown is a nice place to visit too so is Central Park.

Go with an open mind and you will enjoy it...after all there is no other city like it on earth! You can get around almost all of Manhattan via the subway network so you don't have to worry about expensive cab rides. When I left the fare was $2.00 each way (don't know if it increased). Be careful when moving around the subways though and don't try to look like a tourist and you would be fine.

Enjoy your trip :)

I have been and I couldn't even begin to give you one favourite spot as I loved it all. Central Park is amazing - I know we have beautiful parks in London, but the fact that there is this huge space of natural land, most of it just woods rather than a managed park, slap-bang in the middle of a city is stunning. I really enjoyed the Met and the Guggenheim, but there is a little art gallery / museum in what was a private house called the Frisk collection, which is really worth a look as you get a real feel for how the house would have been when lived in, and it has a beautiful indoor courtyard which is very restful.

It is a really great city and there is so much to do! My other fave thing is no use to you, but my best friend lives there now, so that is another reason I love it!!

Here are some ideas of what you can do. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see:
Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house.
UPPER WEST SIDE:
Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West,
Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.
MIDTOWN:
Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Museum of Modern Art
Sony Bldg
Rockefeller Center
Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats!
Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington.
Empire State Bldg.
The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids.

CHELSEA:
Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun.

WALL ST:
Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see.

THE VILLAGE:
Funky shops in the West Village. Walk through the NYU Washington Square Park. The East Village has some shops from new artists and designers

SOHO:
Great galleries and shops on n off West Broadway. Walk thru to Little Italy for awesome meals and desserts...walk through Chinatown. CANAL STREET has stall after stall of Designer "copies"...bring cash and bargain and watch your purse!

These should put an awesome smile on your face. Bring your camera and takes lots of photos to remember your trip. You'll have a blast! OH...BUY this weekly magazine: TIMEOUT NEW YORK on any newstand to see what's going on each week/day. :)

I just loved Time Square. My cousin and I stayed at a hotel on 45th street and it was basically in the heart of Time Square. I loved it because MTV was right on the corner and planet hollywood etc. Everything is right there and there's just lots to do. Lots of people selling stuff on the street and random talent doing there thing out there as well. Also, if you don't mind walking a little bit... go up a few blocks and you're right at Rockafeller Center... NBC studios... that areas great cause there's a good chance of seeing a few stars. Anyway, I just love New York, but midtown manhattan just rocks. Never a dull moment. Food, shopping....and loads of entertainment...can't beat it!

Oh it's so brilliant!
Last time I went, I went on the Greenwich Village food tour which was great. Our guide took us on a walk around the village and we tried lots of food from various shops. We also heard about the history of the area and the architecture.
We also went up Top of The Rock which is the flat roof of the Rockefellar Centre. The view is fab as you can see more of the park and the Empire State Building. Which you obviously can't see if you go up the Empire State Building... They don't treat you like tourists and spend the whole time trying to get money out of you like in Empire State. You are just left to get on with it and enjoy the view. The chandelier in the lobby on the subway level is beautiful too.

I live here, I love the Museum of Natural History, especially the 4th floor (the vertebrate evolution).

I also love the Cloisters, which has the Unicorn Tapestries.

Central Park is probably my favorite part of the city though.

I was there 9 years ago and it was fab - it was like all the films you've seen about New York, all rolled into one! I really enjoyed the Twin Towers, but sadly they're no longer there! I also enjoyed getting hammered on cocktails at some seedy pool bar in Greenwich Village, but I can't remember exactly where it was now! You'll have fun wherever you go.
