I've seen tithes do a faar sight more than just keep the lights on! Do you watch TBN?And look at all the poor people giving these supposed Jesus-like priests their hard earned cash! Do you think Jesus would buy a bently and a mansion w/ that money...or keep what he and his own need to live comfy and help and bless others with the rest??

Well..it's not taking care of widows and feeding the poor anymore! It must have started w/ a practical purpose, but it is now being abused!

You are already tithing, it's called taxes, and you're paying a lot more than 10%

You seem to forget that the Jews were not just a religion, they were a nation with a government.

Jesus stated, "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar, and render unto God what is God's"

Tithing is commanded in the Old Testament for Israel as a nation under God. The same command is not repeated in the New Testament for Christian believers. Rather, we can only glean some principles of giving from New Testament passages like II Corinthians 8 and 9.

If the "tipping" idea were there, it might come in the concept of a "free will offering" in the Old Testament (giving over and above the tenth). But, the primary purpose of giving is not for the priest. It is a gift given to God. The priests were provided for out of the gifts but the gifts went to pay for other things like the maintenance of the tabernacle, the temple later on, and so on.

Anyone who serves the Lord in full time ministry knows that you don't expect to be "tipped" by the people in your congregation. Rather, if you are "tipped", you are "tipped" and blessed by God. And, contrary to much misunderstanding on the subject these days, these blessings are most often not monetary.

Love, joy and peace to you

The sacraficing of an animal was the blood atonement for sin until Christ came and shed his blood. Tithing in the old testament covered alot of things and if you study it out their tithing acutally amounted to about 33 to 35% of all that they owned, it fed the poor, supported the church took care of widows just to name a few things. They also had to give a portion of their fields to feed the poor.......there's a good set of tapes on this subject by John Mac Arthur and he covers the old and the new testament if you are really interested you can order them from 1-800-55-Grace. It is really a interesting study.

Well...let's see....mostly tithing around here is used to help run and maintain the church and a small portion for the pastor for his hard work in keeping and teaching the faith. Would you rather sit in a non-air conditioned, dimly lit, not that holy feeling church, or a nice, presentable one where you can worship in peace? Also, wouldn't you at least like to give the pastor a little "something-something" for his trouble in helping you and teaching you more? I'll leave that to you.

Knowledge and giving spiritual enlightenment was the job of the Priest

Animal sacrifices was the job of the levites.

Both the Priests and the Levites were able to share the meat/grain offerings
