Artistic Prof is undoubtedly a Soldier. His remarks are low key as a Soldier's are. I have much more trouble believing the integrity of the 'wannabe's' who talk about their 'heroic' exploits, or accept thanks for Serving their Country. Soldiers aren't like that. I have been married to a Senior Army Officer who has served 26 years thus far, and I have never heard him, or any other Soldier self aggrandizing, ever.
Modesty is de rigeur in The Forces. Many of the things artistic Prof has offered on this forum resonate with me and I have no doubt that he is genuine.

I am going to answer this so I can hopful put it to rest. Mike67333 was talking about being in Somalia, and I was there. I simply stated that he should not make himself out to be a hero, as he was claiming to have saved us Rangers that day. He got all bent out of shape and started acussing me of all sorts of things. He wants me to prove myself to him. But here is the thing. I am a disabled veteran. I served my time. I got injured and I am out. I spent a year learning to walk again. At this point in my life I do not feel that I should have to justify anything. I was simply making a point not to make yourself out to be a hero, and I am getting crap for it. The fact is that hero's are not made, they just happen, nobody ask to be one, and a real hero would not have to brag about it. Also the only hero's from that day are dead.
If you really want to get down to it. According to Mike, he was part of the group that went in, but Mike claims to have been in the Engineers, and it was not the Engineers, but the 2-14th Infantry that went in. So how did Mike, who claims to have been with the 44th Eng BN end up in the 2-14th Infantry? he also claims that he lost some friends that day, only two people died that day, and they were both Infantry in the 2-14th, not Engineers, but Mike claims they were in his squad. Then he asked me why I was only an E-5, I told him that I changed MOS, so you drop one rank then you get it back when you pas BNOC. Mike claims to have changed MOS too, and kept his rank, he states that he was a 12B and became a 12F, what Mike does not tell is that the Army consolidated the ranks. He changed nothing, the Army did. I on the other hand switched to a different MOS, so I had to change my rank. But if I pased BNOC, I would get my rank back with back pay. i did not get to do that as I got injured and had to get out. Mike also claims to have been to many secret missions and he was there and back before anyone knew he was gone. What a crook, Combat Engineers do not go on secret missions, and when he transfered to 12F he was a crew man on a truck, what the hell kind of secret mission needs a truck crew man? Then he claims to be Mason, but he knows nothing. The fact is that I only placed this to clear some things for those of you believing m Mike, you only heard half the story. I am who i say, but I am not going to prove myself to anyone, as I don't have to. I am retired and doing what I love, teaching English in South China and Painting. I answer questions case I want to help people, and I have nothing to prove to no one, but myself. I know what kind of life I lead, I know who I am and that is okay with me, and anyone who does not like it taugh.

It is fairly common for people to fake a military background.

Currently the most likely place to see this is in the 'antiwar' movement. (So far about 100% of the people the anti-war movement has publicized as veterans who saw/participated in 'war crimes' have been outed as fakes.)

More than likely, it just means that he is ashamed of his rank in the military. No big deal really. If he served honorably, don't give him such a hard time.
