The Christian calendar starts from the birth of Christ. It's actually a few years off, but what can you expect.

The actual name of our calendar is the Gregorian calendar, instituted by Pope Gregory

There were several types of calendars before the current one. Early Romans kept track of the time by stating the year by saying, for example, the 5th year of the reign of Caesar Augustus. The Mayans had a calendar which was more accurate than ours. Even the current calendar is not the original "Christian" calendar. In the 1700's, we switched from the Gregorian Calendar to the Julian Calendar, and lost several days to make up the time. Russia didn't make the change until the 20th century, so the "October Revolution" actually occured in September, by the current calendar.

Because europe and the US are mostly christian (were christian) so they work on the calender that others have used before. If we shanged the calender system all that has gone before must be changed and no1 wants that job. Also Jesus was meant to be born in what we now call the year 0 but the monk who came up with the christian calender actually miscalculated and we now know that Jesus was actually born in what would be 4bc. bet you didn't know that.
