Modern casts are made from a special type of resin that is first soaked in hot water and then placed on the limb and then left to harden. It is called "Lightcast" and comes in some amazing colours. The children at frature clinic usually opt for bright pink or orange.

It depends on where you broke it and the Dr. that you use. The cast itself, although it will feel very heavy, really isn't. The hardest part is staying off of it while it is healing, trying to take a shower with a plastic bag on your leg and feeling helpless and the itching underneath the cast.

The worst part if they don't operate, is having the bone set. They give you an injection with a needle that looks like it for the Incredible Hulk that is to numb the area then they manually (use their hands, that is) manupulate the bone back into place.

Fortunately, bones to heal, even if it takes a few months and while if feels like forever, it is a very short period of time in the overall scheme of your life.

Good luck!

whatever you do, don't scratch under the pot with a ruler. my mate did that, ended up with it getting stuck down there and the doctors had to take it off and put a new one on.

And when its on and you want to wash make sure you have the bag the right way round; my brother put his on inside out by accident and managed to soak the pot so he had to have his leg re-cast.
