In Luke 4:16-21, Jesus reads a passage from Isaiah in the synagogue. There are many other examples in the gospels of Jesus quoting Scripture, and also writing in the sand. So I guess the question is not about reading and writing, but about whether or not Jesus LEARNED these things, or was just born knowing?? Jesus is the Word personified (John 1:1-14), so maybe he never had to LEARN the Scripture because he IS the Scripture.

ALL Jews at the time of Jesus were taught to read and write. Most could read, write and speak Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic.

Joh 8:6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

Luk 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

"And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read." (Luke 4:16)

"Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground." (John 8:8)

And in response to "oro veritis", the people who knew Jesus would not have died for a lie. Who would choose the death penalty over telling the truth?

Because it's a waste of time. If you already know what you were put upon the earth to do, you don't care about what other people thought is right or wrong. The books are all about that.

After a while, every one realizes that reading should supplement your own thoughts not populate them completely.

Thats a damn good question Larry! Why should he, if he was the son of god all he would need to do was send his thoughts and read others thoughts.
