LCD is much better, even though everybody says plasma is sweet.
Plasma:
Plasma is not a perfect technology, and its weaknesses should be taken into account when deciding on a display. Plasma screens are fragile. They must be shipped standing up, and as they are mostly glass, they must be handled with extreme care. They are heavy, and the wall mounts must be properly set. They should never be installed where they could be knocked over or bumped into.
Plasma sets are power hungry because of the high voltages necessary to activate the actual plasma elements. The picture quality degrades with time due to phosphor wear, much as a traditional CRT TV set does. Also, the glass face reflects light in the room, somewhat degrading the image, as compared to the other flat panel technology, LCD.
LCD:
Most LCD displays have a non-reflective face. By comparison, the glass surface of plasma screens often reflects the lights in the room, degrading picture quality. Like plasma displays, you can put them almost anywhere. You can hide the connections for power and signal inside the wall, and they use very little space. Like the couple in the famous Phillips ad, you could even put one on the ceiling. Their advantages are that they weigh much less, are far less fragile, and use much less power than plasma displays.
Like plasma displays, if you can put a picture or painting on a specific wall in your home, you can usually put an LCD display there. If you want them to hide away, there are slick new mechanisms from companies like Tech Art that will cover them with high-end artistic reproductions that roll away when you want to watch TV. Other companies like Vantage Point have created hardware called the UFO that allows you to creatively position the thin sets in ways that also allow you to move the set out of the way in a number of innovative configurations. The low power usage and heat generated by an LCD display lowers the need for fans for ventilation and the lower weight allows for a lighter mechanism.
While the plasmas light output degrades with time due to phosphor wear, the LCD does not suffer from the same malady. Like plasma displays, they work in a variety of lighting. They usually have a variety of inputs and accept everything from standard NTSC TV to HD.

Neither, buy SED.
It's the best of both worlds.
Oh i'm sorry, they aren't available yet.
Until then: find a LCD with high contrast (at least 1000 to 1, higher number is better). Stay away from the models who don't have a protecting glass screen in front of the LCD itself (if they still can be found).
Plasma: they burn in, like the CNN-logo if you always look at CNN. Or if you often look at a sexchannel, the spouse might find out because of it's logo burnt in the screen.... Hehehehehe.
Newest plasma models: they made a technology (swapping the lines/'pixels' very fast) because of which the burning in is a lesser problem then before, but that technology isn't a plus for the image quality.
LCD generates a bit lower electrical bill.
So far:
LCD: 9 votes
Plasma: 3 votes
(i did the counting for you, aint i nice? :))

The picture quality is essentially the same between the two. Plasma's can have burn in, are more expensive usually, but are thin and light. The most important thing to remember is that plasmas aren't easy to fix and there aren't many people around who can fix them. You're probably going to buy a new tv in 5years if you go plasma.
LCD and DLP tv's are both good. Be sure to pay attention to the contrast ratio (ask the sales guy to point it out). The best I know of is 10,000 to 1 which gives you an awesome picture regardless of what tv. Normally I think all these types are around 3000 to 1 (major difference).
Also, get one from an established brand like sony/toshiba/hitachi. One more thing, don't buy a kickass high def plasma/LCD/DLP and then go cheap on your component hookup. Look for something called Monster cables but make sure your DVD/VCR or whatever has component video/audio hookups (there should be three holes-red,blue,green on the back). These cables can handle more information from your tv which is neccessary to get a good picture.

There are several pros and cons for each, but to cut a long story short gor for an LCD;
WHY?
1- In general is the later generation of tvs, LCD screens are more advanced
2- Lower electricity bills - plasms consumes a lot of electricity
3- Lighter in terms of weight
Take into consideration that LCDs are more expensive (because they are of superior technology) and have slightly lower resolution than plasma.

You have alot of answers already but pretty much you have to make the decision yourself. Are you going for picture quality? Plasma. Do you want longevity? LCD. Take these other questions into consideration. How long do you want it to last? Are you going to use it for gaming? Are you going to wall-mount it or tabletop? Myself, I'd prefer an LCD, they are not subject to burn in at all, lighter, longer life and slimmer. Plasma's main benefit is better picture quality...that's it. But bear in mind, depending on the problem with a plasma, they may or may not be repairable.

LCD's have a much longer lifespan before you start getting problems such as dead pixels. Plasmas are a lot more expensive to fix, and tend to get screen burn much easier than LCD's. Check out the links I have typed here.
