It can be a sign of diabetis and this can be checked with simple test at the vets. However at this time of year it is normal for animals to drink a lot of water, especially in this heat. My Yorkie is drinking a bowl of water a day. I fill it with fresh water in the morning before I go to work and when I come home it is almost empty. If you are worried then you should get the dog checked.

Is it an increase in drinking or has the dog always drank a lot of water? How old is the dog? Dogs age faster than we do so it could be a health problem. It is better to take it to the vet for a health check than to wait a couple of months and find out it was something you could have treated and now it is too late.

if it has only started recently it is probably the heat, but if it has been going on for a while, it may be due to a health problem. Dogs on average can drink up to 2 litres of water a day, just like us. If it is a lot more than this than it might be wise to get the dog checked.

excessive heat will make a dog drink alot more water and it does not necessarily mean there is health issues, some breeeds of dogs drink an excessive amount normally. Big dogs will drink alot. Keep an eye on the dog and as long as the dog is eating and acting normal with no other signs of sickness i would not worry much about it but if the dog starts showing abnormal symptoms or behavior get the dog to the vet to get it checked out.

I agree with the previous answers in the possibility of diabetes or just thirsty due to the hot weather. However, it may also be the only way that the dog can cool down. It continues to drink because it still feels hot. Show the dog somewhere it can go to cool right down, such as a cold floor or a shady corner. If you can provide (and the dog is happy to do so) some water that it can stand in, all the better. Many dogs like swimming and it is the quickest way to cool them down.

My dog drinks more than a litre a day. He drinks until his whole bowl is empty and i have to refill it straight away. I thought it was a problem and asked the vet as i was concerned about diabetes he did a blood test and he was fine. He said that it was just the fact that he liked water. It is a good thing though that he drinks alot. If you are concerned get a blood test for the dog, it will put your mind at ease. But i am sure he is fine. This was at anytime of the year and not just in the summer. But if you have only noticed it now then it is most probably due to the heat.

You could measure how much he's drinking, this is also helpful if you're going to take the dog to the vet. If its drinking more then 100 ml of water per kilo of dog then it probably has a problem, most likely with its kidneys, or it could be diabetic.

Dogs tend to drink a lot of water anyway but the amount and regularity can vary depending on the level of exercise he has done, the temperature he is in and even if he has eaten something salty (just like us!)...excessive drinking I would say would be if he is almost constantly at the bowl with less than a few minutes between trips and from what I know that can be a sign of Diabetes or even Kidney problems. Hope this helps!

Yes it could be diabetes, you don't say whether male or female? If female and not spayed then please take her to the vets and quickly, if a B1tch is un spayed and hasn't had a litter of pups they can get what is called PYOMETRA which is a really nasty infection of the womb and can be fatal if not treated promptly. Having said all this both my dogs are drinking a lot at the moment because of the hot weather, but take it to the vet just for piece of mind.
