Do you want a yes/no answer or critique? Success can be measured many ways, I'm not sure of what you mean - are you good? You have potential.
If you do want critique, read on:
First, I'll assume that you were trying to mimic the photo (if not, you need to add your own elements to the piece). You definitely need to warm up your color palette - in the photo, the eyes are cool and the rest of the subject warm, and this provides great contrast. Also, add shadows to the left side of the face, the nose, and under the chin.
You might bring the lips down a few notches. Right now they're competing with the eyes because they're so dark. The eye on the right is a bit wonky, too - I think you need to move the iris (colored part) up a bit, or the right edge of the eye in a tad because of the 3/4 view. You might want to thicken the eyebrow on the right as well.
Last of all - the edges of the face want a bit more fat. If you look at the shadow on the left cheek in the original picture you don't see much in the way of cheekbones. The right side of the face should have a little more of a curve (see the straight line where the cheek comes down to the chin? Right there). Also, add a little pudge to the left jawline, along with some shadow. Right now it looks a bit like a cutout.
Good job with the highlights, especially in the eyes and on the bit of cloth over the head. The hair looks hairy, too :)
Last bit of advice - don't be frustrated, painting (especially with oils) takes some serious time. I can't count the number of times I put something away so I can get it out in a few weeks to look at with fresh eyes - that helps a lot, helps to see what's wrong. Good luck with everything!
Oh yeah - are you painting with oil on paper? Unless you've discovered some magic sort of primer these paintings won't last long. Get ye some canvas!

hi i tot id comment(crit) on your piece. you have more cooler colors compared to the original reference. did u use too much white? speaking about reference, i assume you were trying too hard to mimick the original photo and this is where you leave out certain details which makes your painting average in quality. the positives are the resemblance between the reference and your work and i thought the detail that caught my attention was how well u worked on the eyes which is essential for every portrait. Anyway this was done back in 2002 and i think u might have already progressed further. Im a painter myself and im glad to share with you some of my works and talk art. U can mail me at muhdsyahrul@hotmail.com. have a nice day.

nice handling of paint but what can really be said about reproduction? If you have to ask if you are a successful painter in a yahoo answering forum, I believe you already know the answer. I encourage you to think less about trying to reproduce what you see rather using paint as a tool to create dialog. Now what you want it to say is up to you. Keep it up.

Itd epends on what do you mean by a succesful painter. You see, in these kinds of paintings there is not much creativity involved. You just paint what you see. I guess a succesful artist paints what nobody else can see or feel. Wish you luck.

You have succeeded in painting a copy of a photograph and proven that you are artistic. A true artist lives for the art, not the success.
Nice piece...what else can you do?

That's pretty good, try painting a family member and I would suggest warming up your colors a little for a more dramatic effect. Keep up the good work.

Not bad but you can see that you need to spend a lot more time painting and learning. Over time, many long hours and you will find that you will develop way's to move paint and also find your own style. Stick at it and you will be fine.

No. That is a poor reproduction of a popular image. Use a better colour palette, paint from life, be more creative with your subject matter.
