Christmas
in winter when the sun seemed weakest, pagans held ceremonies to get this source of warmth and light to come back from its distant travels. December 25 was thought to be the day the sun began its return. in an effort to convert pagans. religious leaders adopted this festival and tried to make it "christian".

Easter there is no indictaion of the observance of the easter festival in the new testament, states the encyclopedia britannica. How did easter get started? it is rooted in pagan worship. While this holiday is supposed to commemorate jesus' resurrection, the customs associated with the easter season are not christian. For instance, concerning the popular "Easter Bunny" the catholic encyclopedia says "The rabbit is a pagan symbol and always has been an emblem of fertility."

New Years
The date and customs associated with new years celebrations vary from one country to another. Regarding the orgin of this celibration The Word Book Encyclopedia states: "The Roman ruler Julius Caesar established January 1 as New Years's Day in 46 B.C. The Romans dedicated this day to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and new beginnings. The month of january was named after Janus, who had two faces-- one looking forward and the other looking backward." so New years is founded on pagan tradtions.

Halloween. The encyclopedia Americana says: "Elements of the customs connected with Halloween can me traced to a Druid [ancient Celtic priesthood] ceremony in pre-Christion times. The Celts had festivals for two major gods-- a sun god and a god of the dead..., whose festival was held on november 1st, the beginning of the celtic new year. The festival of the dead was gradually incorporated into christain ritual

Each country has its own rituals and cultural beliefs regarding this matter. They are not entirely wiped out. there are still who follow these rituals but because people are becoming educated and knowledgable about this matter particularly paganism, it is slowly phasing out.
