The Quran is essential but we need to look at the Prophet's life and example to truly understand Islam. Both the Quran and the Hadiths (sayings, actions, approvals of the Last Prophet) go hand and hand. You cannot have one without the other. The Quran says obey Allah (God) and Obey the Messenger.

We have to look at authentic narrations because some hadiths are fabricated and some are weak. Many Muslims leave the hadiths to the side thinking that "we only follow Quran." That is deviating from Islam. Jamal al Zarabozo wrote an excellent book refuting that claim it is called "The Authority and Importance of Sunnah (hadiths or way of the Prophet)." He gives his proofs in the book.

well, the best way to 'understand' any faith is to check into its books...
- to know islam, you can check into its teachings and what better way to know but thru the messengers life - his sayings , his greatness - there are vast works on understanding the essence of islam... but the Quran is the book of God Himself! - every verse, every word, every alphabet!

"Invite all to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are most gracious" ( Quran 16:125 )

“Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands clear from error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.” (Quran 2:256)

its bit complicated but yes quran has the major part, rest is saying of prophet , but sayings don,t challange the quran, they only elaborate the quran and make certain rules. for example quran asks to pray, and prophet tells how to do this.

The Sunnah or Hadith consists of the teachings, sayings, and actions of Prophet Muhammad. This information was meticulously reported and collected by his Companions. It is essentially an elaboration of the Qur'anic verses that shows how they are to be implemented in one's daily life ALLthe true muslims agree about that
