My daughter has scoliosis of the back and it has been suggested that she has steel rods put into her back to straighten it. Could people who has perviously had this operation please let me know how this back surgery has changed their lives.

I was diagnosed with it when I was in grade school. The doctors told my mom that I needed to wear some sort of a brace to straighten my spine. She brought it up to me to decide if I wanted to or not. I chose not to based on the ridicule I would have received at school having to wear a brace. 20 years have gone by now and I have constant back issues. It doesn't hurt me usually but I can tell it is crooked and my posture, seated or standing, is horrible. It's to the point now where when I do stand or sit straight, that's when it hurts and I have to hunch back over for it to stop. If not the steel rods I would definitely look in to some sort of a brace. The only choice I had 20 years ago was a huge metal contraption but now I think they have smaller plastic ones you can hide under clothing. Don't let her grow up without doing something, trust me it will continuously get worse. Good luck to you both.

I was diagnosed with this 50 years ago in 6th grade. My mother had inquired about the operation but I did not want it. I did exercises and swimming. It shows with most clothes, but I have had only minor trouble with it. I have had 2 children and had no problems during pregnancy. I get some back and hip pain now but not all that bad. The answer to your question needs to be from doctors who asses the extent of the problem. I know people who have had the surgery and some are almost completely better and some are not.

My niece was diagnosed with this problem over 25 years ago. My sister-n-law was very lazy, so my niece never wore her brace. My niece is a short, fat woman now and at the age of 33 her back is very curved. She is not attractive and always looked pregnant, even when she wasn't over-weight. She has back pain and doesn't exercise because of the pain and now she is very fat.

I think the surgery is a good idea. It is too late for my niece now. Good luck.

My daughter's close friend had it done. It was a complete success. She gained height and is thriving.
