I can't help but think that the Iraq conflict was only started to secure oil supply, so that the US didn't have to touch its own 'meagre' allowance of oil.

Without foreign oil America ceases to be a super-power and its 'manifest destiny' is in tatters. This is unthinkable. But don't see this is the *first* energy war.

They're two very important considerations to factor in:

1/. Russia controlled its, Soviet block, allies by controlling their oil and gas supplies. The U.S. does the same with its allies. This is the main source of US power.

2/. It is suggested that by using its might to make sure oil is traded in dollars the US may tax its empire, see ref.. Other countries must have stocks of dollars to buy oil; the US allows the $ to inflate; and the US therefore has to give back fewer goods than were origionally used to aquire the dollars - the difference is the tax.??

No, the invasion of Afghanistan after September 11 was the first.

It was nothing to do with the Taliban or Al Qaida, it was about putting an oil/gas pipeline into Afghanistan and controlling the territory there.

Watch how former Unocal (oil company) advisor Hamid Karzai became Bush's "special envoy" to Afghanistan and has since become the country's president:

Sounds like Niall Fergueson is an idiot. Oil is a commodity.

In the future I suggest that you talk to somebody who understands the meaning of the word: 'commodity.'

(Hint - Iraq's oil mostly goes to Europe and Asia.)

The first Gulf War was also about oil.
That was before the current Iraq war, so the current one can't possibly be the first.
