I'm moving to a small house by myself soon with a smallish backyard, I want to get a small dog that is still aggressive enough to protect me incase of intruders etc.. but all the littles one seem to be yappy and timid??.. I used to have a boxer who was great but he passed away and a dog his with his energy and size would get bored in my small house.. plus I work 10 hours a day so it would be hard to exercise the dog regulary..

Firstly, there is nothing as a 'guard dog'. The fact is that it is the training which makes a dog a guard dog. U can have a boxer yet it may be the most friendly dog ever! Even a beagle can guard the house well if trained well. Secondly, Bull Terriers were basically bred to be batting dogs. They are meant to kept in places where there are too many animals around. A fact is that the bull terrier is a poor guard dog. If u want a small guard dog go for a wired haired fox terrier or a miniature.

terriers are nuts and make a good guard dogs. Do you have enough space in your garden though if you'll be out 10 hours a day? If you can't guarantee you can exercise him regularly you'd be best investing in a kick ass security system. Alternatively, I work long hours and I have cats. They're very protective, and would destroy an intruder, whilst I once had an Alsatian who looked scary but did nothing but walk home sideways when I was attacked, leaving me to bite the guy myself!
Take a self defense class, set up an alarm system and protect yourself. Get an animal for company and if he happens to be a bit demonic so much the better!

Well, my miniature pinscher seems to be a pretty good watch dog. He goes running and growling out into the dark every night in the back yard and scares anything that is out there. The racoons are larger than he is but his growling scares them and they climb the up in the trees. Some people get scared of his barking and growling too - especially the mailman.
There are also some large dogs that do well in a small house and with a small yard. Golden retrievers for instance. As long as you take them for walks, they are fine. Great Danes also do well. Both of these breeds prefer to just stay right next to their people than to go outside.

I have two chihuahua's they are the best guard dogs ever, just as long as you have a gun. they will wake you up and TRY to protect you but you better be able to back them up. They are great in apartments and don't need too much daily excercise. Just make sure to get 2 of them as the need a companion other than that, just take em out 3 or 4 times a day for a potty break and feed them and they are very happy with you.

The West Highland White Terrier. I've got 2 they're pretty ballsy little dogs and will alll ways let you know that there is someone outside. But most dogs will let you know when there is someone around. The Westie is compact and has hair not fur so its fine for them to be inside aswell. They are quite pricey though!
Just watch out for those little doge that just stand there and bark at nothing, birds, leaves, crickets etc. Sooo annoying!!!!! Check out Westie on google and images aswell..

Absolutely a daschund!
They are brave (think they are bigger than any dog around), don't need a lot of exercise if you have a yard, and have a lovely deep "warning" bark. They are not yappy at all.

to be honest, all you need is a little dog that is loud. if there is someone at your house, the dog will bark and the bad guys will leave because they know the dog is going to draw attention to them. if they are REALLY bad guys ... they would hurt your big dog.. shoot it or stab it... the little dog would run and hide but still be barking and drawing attention to your house.
