Getting a haircut is so traumatic! Everyone else always has good luck and I wind up coming home and recutting. With that said, the best luck I and others have had is to have a picture of what you want, or even take a person with you that has a hair style you like. Make sure that the style will work with your hair type. Go in early enough to look at books if you don't already have a picture. If you don't know the hair style lingo, a picture helps.
My daughter's stylist suggested an alternative style and showed her a picture in a book and it worked out great.
Also, go in with your hair how you wear it and make sure she discusses your hair type; feeling it, brushing through it, etc., before she takes you back to wash.
As for the highlights, I would have her do the cut first, then place the highlights.
And finally, pay the extra to have her style it for you. If something isn't right, you will see it when it is dry and styled, and have her correct it then, rather than go home with wet hair and be surprised.

Make sure she isn't in a hurry and is willing to actually listen to what you want and not just nod her head and start snipping. Many hair stylist just figure, "this is my job let me do it" but some good ones are like, "My job is to give them a good hairstyle that the guest wants, not me so I'll take my time and give em what they want"
My hairstylist is young and when I went to her, it was the first time I went to a hairdresser in years! I cut off 12 inches and was scared to death. But she put my mind at ease and gave me an absolutely wonderful hair cut and I won't go anywhere else now.
Good luck!

After you tell them what you want ask them questions about that type of hairstyle and if the answeres sound right than your on the same page as them if they sound strange than you will need to reverse the situation.Ask any question about that hairstyle in details even if you know the answeres .See this way you are checking to see if they are paying attention and also if the are understanding what you want.

When I wanted a major change of style, I took a picture of someone with the style I wanted. Of course I made sure our faces were shaped the same and that we had the same type of hair. Mine is naturally curly, so I knew better than to ask for a style for straight hair. I don't have time to straighten mine. So be realistic in what you ask for and you should come out just fine!

you should talk it over with ur hairstylist about the specific hairstyle you want. it would really help if you bring in a picture of the hairstyle you want so they can follow it. if you see they are cutting too much, u can always stop them to make sure they kno what theyre doing!

Explain to her your desired style, most times if the stylist can't fully understand the clients request, they present magazines (hair) for you to better describe your need so that they can satisfy your style. Don't worry you should be fine.

You just go and talk with the hairstyler. If your family told you the hairstylist is okay that's one good start. The rest is up to you. Happy salon-going!!!

they should have magazines with hair styles in them, point one or two out and ask the stylist if it is right for your hair type and face shape, if they really mess your hair up, oh well, it grows quickly anyway.
