God can't and will not lie because He is truth. A lie is in the other than truth category.
To understand this you must see that all is a revelation of His being and state of being in existence. He wants to be known and accepted as He is because that is what He deserves from those who do desire to know Him. Since all is a revelation of His very being and nature, He can not violate His own laws as they are revealed.
In answer to can't/won't do, read His laws that are recorded in for example the ten commandments for a start. Added to that is as one already stated He will not force anyone to return his love. That is an option that each and every member of the Mr Adam family must decide to do or not to do.

He cant tell the truth. He cant make a rock so BIG he cannot lift it.
He cant make a grain of sand so small he cant find it.
She cant make a God who is really a He only pretending to be a He.
He cant make an Oak Tree so big that its wheels sound like a heavy potatoe flying from the planet mars to lithgow in only about 5 minutes.

God is not man that He should resort to lies. People lie to make themselves look good, to get something out of something or somebody that they normally would not be able to do. And that is because humans are limited in capabilities and abilities but they have a mind that wants to do much more. Therefore greed, jealousy, anger, blah blah...Whereever, God is and has everything ! He is powerful beyond imagination. He is a "dictator". Who can stop Him. My conclusion : If you are All powerful, should you want to lie ?

The short version is that god lied because he feared his creations becoming equal to him.
Atheism aside, God lied in the very first book of the bible.
The word Elohim is a plural word. The hebrew and christian translations are the only worldwide translations making it singular. Properly translated it means brethern or pantheon. God claimed he was the only god, yet right before casting Adam and Eve from the garden, he speaks to the Elohim. This is typically attributed to him actually speaking to angels and whatnot, using the bastardized translation.
In genesis 2:16-17, we're told "16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." I've had people argue that this is metaphorical, and it means that they will no longer be immortal, but would be subject to physical death.
Let's move along to genesis 3:1-5...1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "
4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
Now we know the story from this point; Eve eats the fruit, gives some to Adam and they cover up, because apparently if you know you're naked, you want to be dressed. God spanks them both, and right before kicking them out of his sandbox says...(genesis 3:22) And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." US?!? US?!? The one and only god, claiming that now, not only are there other gods, but that if they eat from the OTHER TREE they'll live forever...but he said that they would die WHEN THEY ATE THE FRUIT. So much for that old immortality arguement.
Wait there's more. We've established, using the bible, that they were told, :for when you eat of it you will surely die" by God. The devil contradicted that statement..."You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." According to biblical legend and mythology, Adam lived to be over 900 years old.
So you tell me, why isn't the devil honored for being the one who was actually truthful here?

God would never lie. Why would HE? HE doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. There is one thing God wouldn't do: force you into doing something. GOD is a strong believer in free will, that's why.
