This is a common problem these days. Here are a few suggestions:
- Check your startup
You probably have too much loading with Windows at startup. Go to Start -> Run and type msconfig. Hit OK and look on the startup tab. Only disable what you recognize and are sure you don't need. If you're unsure, search on Yahoo! for the name. You will get more information. If you can't find anything on the name, then it's probably a malware/spyware/virus.
- Install Anti-spyware programs
Spybot, Pest Patrol, Ad-aware, etc., are all good utilities to help clean out spyware infections. However, you could use every good utility out there for this, and you still won't catch everything. Sometimes when it gets real bad, you have to format your hard drive and start over with a "clean" install of Windows. Be sure to backup your system every month or so if you go this route, to save yourself time if it happens again down the road.
Start over with a clean install if all else fails. Even if it's not a virus or spyware slowing you down, a clean install will get rid of all the junk sitting in your registry from programs that you've uninstalled but have left remnants behind.

It could just be something messed up in the system. Try a defrag and clean up your system startup. Uninstall any not used programs and run a virus scan.
However, unfortunately among people I know it's fairly common for there to be RAM problems in some Dell laptops. You might want to get that checked out too.

The best what you can do to improve your laptop performance is to format and reinstall your windows, that's if you know how to do it. If you have no idea how to go about it please do not try it.
And of course do take a backup for your important files and check them for viruses before you get them back on the laptop after formatting the laptop.

Run CCleaner, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, and your latest updates Virus application. The first 2 are free just google them. If you don't have AntiVirus software I'd recommend Kaspersky 6. http://www.kaspersky.com

No advice. You got a dell - the ultimate crap of crap. Your better off throwing that POS away and buying yourself a name brand notebook, ie Sony, Toshiba, Fujitso, even Compaq. Dell is a good for nothing company.

along with installing antispyware software i would recommend checking that you have enough free space available. sometimes when there is not enough space (memory) left the computer starts running slower than normal.
Ad-Aware antispyware (its free)
