Steve R, I beg to differ.

Your a/c compressor adds a large amount of load when it's engaged usually decreasing about 7-15% efficiency. However, it all depends on the car and how well the system operates. Some a/c systems don't cycle the compressor as often, while some frequently cycle due to manufacturer specifications or just low freon pressure.

A rough estimate on a 4-cylinder four door sedan(Altima or Accord) will lose about 5-9% fuel efficiency(from experience).

Using your AC does not decrease mpg. Driving with the windows open does.
