I used to have 2 cats and several rooms in our house got bad in the summer time. Best way to do it is set off a flea bomb in each of the rooms. You have to do them separately cause you, and the pets, can't go into the room for several hours after the bomb. Or ideally..if you go away for the weekend with the pets, or have them boarded.. you can set off the bombs all over the house...and when you come back the pesticide would be settled and you should be flea free :)

Only one way--you have to let off one of those flea bombs and everyone, including the pets, must leave the house for about 5 hours. When I was a kid, we had this problem, and it was ridiculous until my father finally let off the flea bomb.

Inside a house, use borax found on your soap aisle. Outside sulpher will repel any fleas ,however if you are interested in a natural solution ...soak chewing tobacco in a container for 2 days and add tobasco sauce and lemon hand soap , pour into a hose end sprayer and water until contents are gone

On a dog.... try bathing it with a flea shampoo (either professionally or yourself). Make sure that you get all of their fur except for their face... but, get as close to it as you can. Make sure that you don't forget their bellies, legs, tails and butts. Make sure that you rinse the animal thoroughly and wash your hands thoroughly afterward, of course! :)
Then comb through the fur with a flea comb to remove all of the fleas. We just did this with my cat a couple of days ago. My friend says that the flea shampoo stuns them and doesn't necessarily kill them. She likes to just crush them between her fingernails. But, I found it hard to do. So, I took to just rinsing them down the drain as I went along.
If you have a large dog and don't want to spend a lot of time on it you might want to just take him to the groomers to let a professional spend the time doing it instead. When you are done try using something like Advantix on your dog to prevent future infestations. Ask your vet about it. Likewise the vet should be able to give you the best info on how to get rid of the fleas, techniques for bathing and combing, how to hold & bathe the dog, etc.
Just make sure that it is in a warm area free of drafts and that you have towels nearby to dry him/her afterward.
If you need to free your home of fleas... first assess whether the infestation is merely in your carpet or if it is in other areas as well. A couple of years ago my friends had a stray cat take up residence under their house and somehow it led to a flea infestation in their basement behind their clothes dryer. It took them months to finally get rid of them completely. I think the little boogers were living inside of the mechanisms as well.
If you have fleas in bedding, drapes, etc. make sure that you thoroughly wash them in hot water.
You can use diatomacious earth for your carpet which is supposed to be completely inert to humans and pets when used as directed. The way that it works is that it makes tiny lacertaions on the outside of the insects and causes death from dehydration. It's not immediate. It takes something like 3-4 days, I think. But, it's better than releasing a bunch of poison into your environment and that of your pet.
I found an article on TheGreenGuide.com (A great resource for all kinds of info!) I copied the pages and put it in a text file for you, in case you would like to read it. There is a second article that I found and put at the end of the document. If you do a search within that document for "solutions" you can skip past the problem explanation of the article. Likewise, the second article looked like it had a review of different types of treatments. So, that might be helpful for you if you are dealing with this kind-of infestation.
The document is a text file. .rtf If you have trouble accessing it, let me know and I will convert it to a simple "html" document for you.
