Depends on the couple and the situation.
I think if both are faithful to each other and fully committed to the relationship, they can be considered boyfriend/girlfriend even if they havent met. I also think there is like, a time limit, to this though ... if you havent done what is neccessary to meet each other within six months, then perhaps its not that serious.
Also, one should always expect the relationship to possibly not work after you meet and spend time together .... and you can only know for sure once you have done that.

I think they can, the difficult part is can you manage without a physical relationship... to my own surprise i am finding that i can... next is the "meeting" issue, will you live up to the picture you have painted of each other... scary, then the practical issue, can you afford lots of air fares, who moves house, work, kids, etc.... such a lot... but i believe it's possible to find away, the road may be hard though...

I was wondering the same thing. We tell each other I love you but don't know if we should call ourselves bf and gf since we have never met. Seems strange not to if you love them but then again the whole online thing is confusing.
