"Lol" Stands for "Laugh Out Loud". There are also other acronyms such as "rofl" or "Rolling On Floor Laughing". From there you can go on to add several more words to emphasise just how funny something was. To give an example: "roflmfao" = "Roll On Floor Laughing My F***ing A** Off".

LOL also means "lots of Love".. either way.. its up to you... if you are chatting.. then someone says "LOL" to you.. it means there's something funny and their reaction to you is to "laugh out loud"... but when you're writing a letter or email.. and you use LOL.. that simply means "lots of love" .
